A trio of Grand Slam champions — Svetlana Kuznetsova, Jennifer Capriati and Serena Williams — have entered the Advanta Championships, which will be contested November 1st-7th at the Pavilion at Villanova University.
The 19-year-old Kuznetsova captured her first Grand Slam singles title Saturday with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Elena Dementieva to become the first Russian woman to be crowned U.S. Open champion. The win pushed Kuznetsova to a career high ranking of No. 6 in the world. Kuznetsova is the third Russian woman to win a Grand Slam title this year as fellow compatriots Anastasia Myskina, who defeated Dementieva to win Roland Garros, and Maria Sharapova, who dethroned two-time champion Serena Williams to win Wimbledon.

The U.S. Open triumph gives Kuznetsova four WTA singles titles and 10 doubles titles. Earlier this summer, Kuznetsova also represented Russia at the 2004 Olympic Games.

"We’re excited to be able to showcase new talent like Svetlana at the Advanta Championships," said Tournament Chairman Peter Fishbach. "She’s one of the many talented Russians who are making names for themselves on the WTA Tour. It’s an exciting opportunity for Philadelphia tennis fans to watch some of the sport’s bright new players."

The Advanta Championships, in addition to awarding a $585,000 prize fund, is the final opportunity for players to qualify for the season-ending tour championships in Los Angeles the following week. The 2004 Advanta Championships begin on Monday, November 1st, with the first round of main draw competition and will end with the finals scheduled for Sunday, November 7th. The qualifying tournament runs Oct. 29-31 at the Healthplex Sports Club in Springfield, Pa.

Advanta’s "Ready, Set, Racquet" program provides children ages 4 to 16 attending the Advanta Championships a free tennis racquet and tennis ball, promoting youth fitness and empowering dreams of all sizes. Through the program, which includes the 70 World TeamTennis matches, Advanta expects to reach more than 40,000 children across the country in 2004.

Tickets for the Advanta Championships are available by calling (866) TENNIS-5 or at the Advanta Championships web site.

Isn't Myskina a Russian woman? Did they forget that she won the French?
