Remembering Mary Jo

One of the best players of the early 90's not to win a slam.

After her heroics against Sabatini in the Quarters of the 93 French and then the easy win over Arantxa in the semis, it seemed fate was finally smiling on her. But Graf, too good in the final set.

Completely, and it's a shame she didn't play into her 30s. She disappeared from the tour at the end of 1999 when it looked like she was still capable of beating anybody.

A lot of respect for Mary Jo. Played intelligent tennis and was nervy, but tough.

GOOD LORD!!! I thought Mary Jo had died or something. I don't like the title of this thread.

Mary Jo retired at the right moment. There was no way she could win against the new crop of players. The girl was good but she was no Steffi Graf. I do wish she had won a major though. I rooted for her in the FO final against Steffi (even though I love Steffi) because I wanted Mary Jo to win a Slam. She played brilliantly but fell shot in the end.

Mary Joe (yes, with an e) is now married to Monica's IMG agent, Tony Godsick.

You scared me with the title of this thread!

Happiness is like a cat. If you try to coax it or call it, it will avoid you. It will never come. But if you pay no attention to it and go about your business, you'll find it rubbing up against your legs and jumping into your lap. - William Bennett

She was a really smart player. The top players really hated to see her in their half of a draw coz at moments she played soo well.

What? Lights, camera and me not a stich of makeup on

The best match I ever saw Mary Joe play was against Seles in the SF of the '91 Australian Open. Monica came out on fire, as usual, and she took the 1st set from Mary Joe 6-3 (I think). Then, Mary Joe played the best set of tennis I have ever seen her play, and she steamrolled through Monica 6-0 in the 2nd set. The final set was a very tense affair with both women playing graet. Monica eventually won 9-7 in the 3rd set, but not before saving a match point. Monica then went on to win the F against Novotna pretty easily, starting her great GS run.

From what I remember, they were doubles partners. Lindsay got word that Mary Joe was reducing her match play and thus decided to switch doubles partners. The only problem is that she apparently didn't tell this to Mary Joe. Mary Joe I think said that she read about Lindsay's decision in the paper or something and was angry about it. Maybe someone remembers better than I do.

I think we all know she's married, has one child and is expecting (or just had) her second child with Godsick. But thanks for telling us.

I never really saw her at her best. I remember watching her against Steffi at OZ in 1999 (correct me if I'm wrong!) and Steffi just won 6-4 final set (she went onto lose to Monica in the QF in a great match!) Still I was really impressed and could see how she could be dangerous when she was younger.

GO CHANDA, AI, VENUS, SERENA!!

Angry

This is a very ridiculous and stupid thread. It makes it seems as if Mary Joe, who is expecting a baby any day now, died when she has not and thought I don't care for her as an analyst, this is very insensitive to her fans who will look at the title of this thread and come to the same conclusion I did.
