Article: Elena to work on her serve?

It appears that Elena is tired of losing b/c of her serve! Could losing her second grand slam final be what it takes to get her to work extra hard on it?
Dementieva looks forward

When Elena Dementieva lost to fellow Russian Anastasia Myskina in the French Open final in June, she could barely hold back the tears. But, after suffering a second grand slam final defeat to compatriot Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-3 7-5 at the U.S. Open, Dementieva was confident her day would come.

"I'm not really disappointed about this," said Dementieva, who beat Amelie Mauresmo and Jennifer Capriati on her way to the final. "It's been a great tournament for me, I beat some great players and had some very tough matches," she told reporters.

"I did everything I could here and feel like I was playing some good tennis. I am satisfied."

Dementieva said her left thigh injury, which troubled her throughout the event, affected her movement in the final. "I was playing through pain for a couple of matches already but it's not about my injury. (Kuznetsova) was playing absolutely great tennis today. There was not much I could do."

Unlike in Paris, where she froze on the big stage, the 22-year-old produced brilliant tennis at times in the final here but was again let down by her serve, one of the weakest on tour.

BETTER SERVE

"It's all about my serve," she said. "I really need to have a better serve to win a grand slam.

"I mean, by serving like this I can beat a lot of players but when someone has a great return there is nothing I can do with this kind of serve," she explained. "It was never a good shot for me. It was something I really didn't like to practice.

"I don't like to start (the match) with the serve. That's what I have to change in my mind," she added. "I have to really like it, I have to love it. Then I'm going to have a good one."

Following Myskina's French Open win and Maria Sharapova's victory at Wimbledon, it is the first time since 1979 that three countrywomen have won grand slams in the same year.

"I feel very proud for Russian girls and for Russian tennis," said Dementieva. "It's a miracle to me that three Russian girls won three grand slams and I was in two finals."

Five of the top 10 seeds at the U.S. Open were Russian but Dementieva said she had higher aspirations than simply becoming the top-ranked of her compatriots.

"I want to be world number one and it doesn't really matter for me if I'm number one in Russia."

swe! she had some classy things to say, and i really liked what she said about having to like to serve.

there's no reason a woman as athletic as she should not be able to have a decent serve. a decent serve would get this girl the number 1 ranking and a few slams. her serve is just so far from decent that it's going to take a lot of work. but i think she's used to "work" her groundstrokes (both are some oft the best on tour) didn't come out of nowhere.

She had a decent serve until a shoulder injury demanded she serve like that. and she's been working on her serve, but it hink she is afraid to use it in matches, but she has such a positive attitude, and she wants to be#1 so i think she'll do some serious work on the serve.. Like justine did in her off season! hopefully she can come back ready to be a champ!

imo the main problem is the ball toss
when she throws it up straight, its an average serve
but when she starts throwing it way to her right, thats when the problems start

Go the Aussies

Lena.

Her serve has improved though, her double fault count isn't as high as it once was.

I know her 'real' serve exists. Elena needs to show it to the fans. Against Momo, she pulled a few of them out and was hitting them at 108 MPH, 106 MPH.

That is a respectable service speed, she even clocked some up at 110 MPH at Wimbledon.

Elena needs to just start employing it and going for her serve. One thing in her motion I would change is that she can try and snap at the ball a little late, it can go into the net alot.

In one of Elena's macthes at the USO, the commentator said they saw Elena practicing serves. She hit 20/20 first serves, all over the box. Its just mental.

Love your serve Elena, then you will work wonders!!!

when elena beat lindsay at the 2000 Chase Championships at Maddison Square Garden, she had a very good serve, but since that shoulder injury she had she couldn't serve with big power... let's hope she works on it in the off-season!

Azarenka Kerber
