Serena

I've talked with quite a few tennis people over the past few days (several of whom actually called the USTA to complain), and it's amazing how many new fans Serena Williams has gained, all because of the way she carried herself throughout the fiasco that was that USOpen Quarter-Final. I'm talking about people who either didn't care for her before, or just liked someone else better. The good thing that did come out of that loss was Serena Williams has a new group of admirers because of the way she behaved in the face of adversity.

There is nothing more beautiful than Evonne Goolagong in full flight moving across a tennis court.

Serena and Venus are great for Tennis, not only because they are great players, but also because of their personalities. Just like (though quite different of course) Capriati they have fans who absolutely adore them while others can't stand them. That's EXACTLY what the game needs. They get people interested in the game, make people take sides, get them involved. It's better that some people hate you than that they are indifferent towards you.

Many people couldn't stand John McEnroe or (early in his career) Jimmy Connors either, but they always played for a full house. Doesn't matter that most of those people were there in the hope that they would lose.....Besides,they mostly went home disappointed anyway

She handled that and the Indian Wells final with a lot of class and maturity. I always put myself in their position, I don't think I would have been as nice, and I'm a lot older than Serena and ostensibly more mature.

No, I have to admit defeat when appropriate, Serena out booty's me. I am and always have been 36 1/2-26-35 1/2. That was the perfect measurement for dames of my generation, none of this skinny anorexia look for me!

Yeah, as the years progress, Serena starts to 'grow on me'
But, if Serena could choose: more fans, or semis in NY, I think I know what she would pick
In fact, was there nothing MORE Serena could do? The mistake was so shameless surely something could have been done . I don't 'blame' Serena or anything, but didn't she have the right to call for the tournament director right away, to demand a replay of the point or I dont know? Or would that have been rediculous?? I wouldn't have found it stupid. She had every right to do that IMO

Yep...she handled herself very very well and wertheim raised that point too. Serena got one of the WORST calls EVER in tennis history against her and all she said was: "what the heck is this?" and even after the bad calls kept stappling themselves she still kept her cool.

Contrast that to a Jennifer who curses on a correction by the umpire that she KNOWS is right...

Everyone reacts differently when they are under stress than they would otherwise. And Jennifer is always on the edge anyway. Pure adrenalin. That's what makes her such an exciting player to watch for those of us who love her. All that nervous energy causes her to lose it sometimes. No problem,it gives the anti-Jenny crowd something to talk about. Until she retires of course,at which time they will choose another player to hate.

Gee don't you think it's time to start giving Jen a break? I mean it's not like she made the ref act a fool?

I mean not like her all you want but she does have people who like her and if someone talked about V & S as obsessively as you are about Jen wouldn't that get on your last nerve?
