The last time it happened...
Recently, at one of the ATP events, the top 4 seeds all reached the semis. This, supposedly, was the first time since the 1999 tourney in... Cincinnati? (Correct me if I'm wrong here.) In both cases, not only did the top 4 seeds reach the semis, but the top 2 reached the finals, with #1 winning.
So this brings up the obvious question: when is the last time these situations occured for the women?
I was going to make it a mini-trivia thing, but decided to just give the answers.
The last time on the WTA tour that:
All the top 4 seeds reached the semis:
2001 New Haven
(On average, it's happened about twice a season over the last 7 years. There are as many or more occurences of no seeds in the semis in recent years.)
All the top 4 reaching the semis with the top 2 reaching the final:
All the top 4 reaching the semis with #1 defeating #2 in the final:
And just for a bonus, the last time the top 8 seeds reached the quarters of a slam was 1993 Roland Garros. However, the semifinal lineup was #'s 1, 2, 5, and 8, with 1 and 5 in the final.
