Question Can Chanda Rubin return to the Top?

Let's face it, Chanda Rubin didn't have the season of her life last year, struggling with injuries, consistancy, and even problems on the court. (Vomiting from the intense heat at the US Open.) In 2000 she was ranked so, so very close to the top 10. (It would have been nice to see her there at the moment.) However, she now sits in 50's and finished off a lackluster year at 16-16. I believe Chanda can return to the top 20 at least, granted she is injury free and motivated. What do you think? GO CHANDA!

I definitely feel Chanda will have an impressive 2002 and will finish in the top 15. After injuries, she started to have impressive wins against competitive opponents. She should pick up her ranking significantly before the French Open, where she will be seeded. I feel she will win Tazmanian Open in January and get to Round of 16 or Quarter Finals at Australian Open. Look for a year like Jennifer had last year from Chanda, she is a great competitor, and if healthy, will rise in rankings.

Can? Absolutely! The skills she had are still there. As a rare "5-tool" player, she has more than enough talent to get back to the top 10 and higher. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't know much about how the game is played. As I was convinced Capriati and Seles still had the capabilities to return to the elite, and win slams, so I'm convinced Chanda has the ability to reach the top echelons of the game.

Will she? Dunno. Bad tactical advice from her coach is the main thing holding her back. Plus, she's notoriously stubborn. If she makes the necessary changes there, she can beat anyone, anywhere. It's not unlike what happened with Capriati and Seles, although their problems were physical (fitness). I figured if either ever got in tip-top shape, they could win slams. Capriati did it this year. Seles got in better shape than she had been in in a while, and the results reflected it. If she goes the last bit, she'll do it too.

So, yes Chanda definitely can do it. She's young, fit, fast, and can smack the hell out of the ball. Will she? Hope so, but don't know. If she stays healthy, she has an excellent chance, tactical mistakes and all. If she eliminates those, it's a certainty.

I had witnessed some perfect tennis from Chanda when she beat Hingis and took the first set off of Graf at 1999 Indian Wells. I truly thought she was going back to the top 10 after that....sadly she lost to Weingartner at (what was then called) The Lipton next week (who, coincidentally also beat Testud). I didn't understand then.....but I do now......very inconsistent.

I only hope she can find that consistency on a CONSISTENT basis and then break back into the top 10!

Cool

Thanks for the replies guys. I have seen Chanda play only a few times on TV so I don't really know what her game is really all about. I know, mostly from reading she can hit the ball quite hard. Does she hit a ball similar to Elena, Meghann, or Mauresmo as far as power? She must have good hands, I'm guessing being a Grand Slam Doubles Champion and all. Furthermore, why did she only compete in 1 slam in 1996? Injuries? Any more thoughts guys?

Yea, 1996 apparently was turning out to be her best year, then she was injured and missed a ton of tounaments. I really hope Chanda gets back to where she once was, and where she belongs! GO RUBIN!!

Considering she didn't play a single match until 5 months into the season, Chanda had a phenomenal year to end that high. She is playing her best ever right now. Beating Serena in 2002 was no mean feat!

With no points to defend until May, Chanda has a great chance to advance several more notches up the rankings. Best of luck to her.

I think her result is somehow quite inconsistent at the end of the year while she lost in the 1st round of Filderstadt and Zurich! I think she has weapons to play against the Williams or even have a victory them, if she is in her good form!

I think she can break into top 10 again if she plays well in the beginning of the 2003!

The fact that Chanda ran out of gas after the U.S. Open kind of surprised me. Does anybody have an idea what happened to her game in the fall?

I know everyone has lapses; Lindsay Davenport had an even bigger laspe, but it just surprised me that Chanda had been on fire since May and then only won three matches in her last four tournaments.

i was wondering the same thing Jakeev. she came back from injury looking so hot, and then, as Brian said, not only did her tactics sometimes just not make sense but she then seemed to just run out of gas. i hope she makes the top ten in 2003 but i suspect that Eggy is right and she'll make the top 20. which is not bad actually!

Chanda will continue with great results in 2003 ending the year in the top 10, possibly the top 5. Also I predict she will win her 1st singles Grand Slam title.

I don't know about a lapse late in the year. The losses were to Smashnova and Schett who are top-20 material players. Besides the terrible loss at the Italian Open, I would say that Chanda has had no other bad losses the entire year.
