Well me and my best pal from the board Moon and I are annual tennis travelers....but we're spoiled b/c we both stay in NYC and have the opportunity to enjoy the US Open. Yesterday we met up with other Board Members Linnie and Ten_Ace (Tennis_Ace). I've met Linnie a few times before b/c Moon and I travel to Miami to the Nasdaq where Linnie Lives, and was my first time meeting Ten_Ace(sp).
We get in the Park...and we head over to the practice courts...
Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams were practicing right next to each other, pretty subdued practice for both, 100's of people watching. On the adjacent court Andy Roddick was practicing but playing Tennis VolleyBall with three other guys on that court.
we head into the Farina-Elia/Petrova match. I was excited b/c i was non-bias, UNTIL...everyone in the stadium was cheering for Silivia...so I turned my attention to Nadia, started screaming her name and good cheers whenever she did great things. Both women where playing Very well...with the exception of some loose errors from Nadia. In the second set Tie-Break...I belted out go Nadia you can do it...and she looked Directly at me!
b/c there were so little people cheering for her. Keep in mind, on the Grandstand was Moya/Rochus...so it was LOUD!
We left after Nadia's second set Tie-break win, and headed over to Arthur Ashe b/c Moon had never seen Federer play live..
Great timing, they we're in the third set tie-breaker, Nice points, and you really Appreciate what Santoro brings to the game with such and unconventional style of tennis, as he turn it into art.
Federer wins....we decided to camp out for the Sharapova/Pierce match. I was so pissed, b/c there we're about 10 Mary supporters and 10,000 Maria supporters, so i got REALLY VOCAL...Moon, Linnie and myself recruited other Mary fans in our section and we cheered her to Victory. There were several people around us PISSED, b/c we were cheering so loudly for Pierce, this one woman...kept covering her ears whenever Mary hit a good shot and we cheered, so we kept annoying her. well Mary Wins!!!! emotional...the choice was Justine or Andre, so we chose FOOD!
as we we're getting food, we saw on the jumbotron that Justine had taken the first set...and Lisa was quickly self-destructing. No need to go in and watch...so back to see Agassi, and as quickly as that, he was up Match Points...WTF? Tennis was happening quickly. Well Sarg was playing so we decided to go into the Sargisian match and then head over to watch Frazier vs Kutznetsova. Man, Amy came out HOT...the crowd was STUNNED at how well she was playing, and I was just wondering WHEN that Serve was going to break down....well, it did at 5-2 and 5-4...and that was all she wrote, Kutz didn't do anything great, Amy just fell apart, it was disappointing.
Well, the girls got tired and I just stuck around for the rest of the day...went to watch the end of the Sarg match and then off to Ashe to see Lindsay and Bovina....ENTERTAINING! They jipped Bovina on a few calls in the Tie-Break shown by the cam but hi-quality tennis. Then MY REASON FOR LIVING...Venus Williams vs. Chanda. I was so NERVOUS in that match.. Venus showed flashes of brillance mixed with still shots of a rookie. But i was happy with the Win. I was sitting with some people that was keeping up with her serving speeds 1st and 2nd. Venus was consistently in the 114 and above range(when they got in) even hit a Fault last night @128
everyone was like....WHOA, but it didn't fly. But she hit a 125mph that registered good. Her second serve was pretty good last nite with speeds consistently in the 90's, and I think they choose to point out Venus slow, to the forehand 2nd serves.
Anyway, she was really emotional and the crowd was really pulling for Chanda, but cheered great tennis from both. I didn't leave Queens till about 12:30am, got into Manhattan about 12:50am and Sold my Sunday's Ticket to a guy on the subway. B/C i wanted to sleep today. I do however think i will go see Venus/Davenport tomorrow Nite.
well that was my day. Happy Tennis everyone!
