Who is more famous Mary Pierce or Maria Sharapova?

This sounds like a dumb question and it probably is.
But I just found it quite annoying and disrespectful that one of the networks who's airing the Open treated Mary Pierce as if she were nobody and reported Maria's loss as the upset of the tournament so far. I know Maria is the next big thing and the media world wide is hyping her. I understand the majority of tennis fans (mostly casual) recognize Maria better than Mary nowadays (Mary used to be quite well-known for her obvious beauty and power game) and therefore ppl are more interested to know about Maria but then treating Mary Pierce, a two time GS winner as if she had won nothing big is full of ignorance and disrespect. They reported that Maria beat herself rather than Mary beat her, which is bullshit and shows how little they know about the game. I can't believe those ingnoramous ppl are doing the job of covering the Open. No wonder tennis will never become big in my country despite the number of ppl who play which is supposed to be one of the biggest of all sports.

Those of us who know better realise that Mary has been playing like a top-ten player again, and should have been the favourite to win this match, based on the players' recent form. But there's a lot of ignorance around. Nothing much you can do about it.

Yeah I think Mary would have been the favourite going into the match and she sure played like it.
I really enjoyed the match, there was some really top quality points.
Its hard to say whos more famous at the moment but Pierce is surely a more well known name to most.

Yeah... Pierce has won 2 slams, and has been around for more than a decade longer.

Why is it that the world never remembered the name of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-

Well...to be fair, Maria Sharapova is still young, beautiful and has just won a Wimbledon this year...

But Mary Pierce has been through many obstacles and hurdles in her life...so many ups and downs...the Grand Slam wins, the losses, the injuries....so Maria, as well as the media, no matter how exciting Maria is, should also be respectful of Mary's game, talent and persistance...

Media coverage of Maria so far is ok...but in the end, real talent, hard work, match-fitness and proper mental attitude in the match is what really matters...and Mary's last match just shows that Mary does all that much better than Sharapova....

So well done Mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Mary!!!!!!!!!!

...Mary Pierce...my queen...forever....

...Daniela Hantuchova...my little angel...

Nadia Petrova...
Lindsay Davenport...

The most sensible thread I've seen in ages around here...
I agree and well done to Mary!

I think as things stand at the moment, ultimately Mary Pierce is the more famous of the two, but right now, since Maria is blonde and pretty and has just shot to fame with her Wimbledon title she is the name on peoples lips for the moment.

same thing goes in my country, they're now saying Maria is the hardest hitter, maria has the best groundstroke ....blah blah. especially the media,
I just can't believe how stupid they are. obviously maria's form is not impressive at the moment. they're still act like it's the end of the world, the biggest upset that she lost to Mary. and people are buying this shit.
but the Thai commentator in this match is alright. he said at the beginning of the match that Maria's better becareful this time Mary is not just an average player and give her some respect she deserves.
so basically i think what is annoying me the most is the media. they don't even know what they're doing at least do some homework.

Mary is the most famous for sure. For a tennis fans she will be remembered as a great champion, great personality - her behaviour is just classic and fashion icon. She has plenty of fans around the world. Every tournament she plays there are plenty of people supporting her, screaming her name etc.

MARY IS THE BEST

I don't know. Don't really think either is famous in Britain. Been nothing about Maria in a british newspaper since Wimbledon. The only tennis players really famous here are Henman, Rusedski, the Williams sisters and Anna. If you're not a tennis fan here you would never have heard of any of the other players.
