Exclamation Champions Race Is Getting Tight Going Into Week 2 Of The US Open

Below, this is the race as the Round of 16 was completed with Venus winning tongiht to take the last spot:

1 4 Lindsay Davenport USA 3679 168 14
2 2 Amelie Mauresmo FRA 3268 136 13
3 3 Anastasia Myskina RUS 2935 40 14
4 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne BEL 2884 128 9
5 12 Venus Williams USA 2145 154 13
6 11 Serena Williams USA 2131 136 9
7 9 Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS 2089 160 17
8 7 Maria Sharapova RUS 2084 92 14

9 6 Elena Dementieva RUS 2019 118 17
10 10 Vera Zvonareva RUS 1994 136 19
11 8 Jennifer Capriati USA 1814 122 11
12 15 Paola Suarez ARG 1439 68 15
13 16 Patty Schnyder SUI 1387 148 19
14 13 Ai Sugiyama JPN 1330 138 19
15 20 Karolina Sprem CRO 1328 2 18
16 5 Kim Clijsters BEL 1238 0 5
17 17 Francesca Schiavone ITA 1230 118 19
18 21 Silvia Farina Elia ITA 1212 76 19
19 28 Nathalie Dechy FRA 1204 80 19
20 18 Alicia Molik AUS 1183 40 18
21 25 Magdalena Maleeva BUL 1147 52 20
22 14 Nadia Petrova RUS 1144 160 18
23 26 Fabiola Zuluaga COL 1130 80 17
24 23 Amy Frazier USA 1117 80 17
25 24 Elena Likhovtseva RUS 1082 2 22

As of tomorrow, it looks as if Maria will fall to at least number nine in the race because Elena D. and Vera play each other and regardless of who wins, either will have enough points to knock her out of the top eight. Svetlana and Venus look to be the next ones who are in danger. Both really need to win their fourth round matches if they want to stay in the top eight because if Jennifer reaches the SF, one of them has a good chance of being knocked out of the top eight and at this point, Venus is more vunerable than Svetlana is. If Serena loses before the semifinal and Venus and Svetlana win, she coudl find herself on the outside looking in. Other than than, I don't see the top four players falling lower than number four unless one of the people I mentioned wins the whole thing and that is a big IF.

Well it's safe to say either Lindsay, Amelie or Justine will be in the no 1 position at the end of the US Open - since noone else can overtake them.

Does anyone know how far each of them has to go so they won't be overtaken?

ie: Does Lindsay or Amelie have to get to the SF, win the tournament to guarantee the no 1 position in the Race till at least after the US Open?

This is the updated Champions Race as of completion of Round of 16 play for the bottom half of the draw:

1 4 Lindsay Davenport USA 3679 168 14
2 2 Amelie Mauresmo FRA 3386 254 13
3 3 Anastasia Myskina RUS 2935 40 14
4 1 Justine Henin-Hardenne BEL 2884 128 9
5 11 Serena Williams USA 2273 278 9
6 6 Elena Dementieva RUS 2177 276 17
7 12 Venus Williams USA 2145 154 13
8 9 Svetlana Kuznetsova RUS 2089 160 17

9 7 Maria Sharapova RUS 2084 92 14
10 10 Vera Zvonareva RUS 1994 136 19
11 8 Jennifer Capriati USA 1956 264 11

I only included the top 11 as the others who are still in the tournament on the top half such as Petrova, Asagoe, Daniilidou and Pierce do not have enough points to be considered. As expected, Elena has entered the top 8 and will most likely stay there unless Venus, Jennifer and Svetlana make the semifinal, which is unlikely for Kuznetsova, and somewhat likely for Venus and Jennifer, thought I don't see Jennifer getting past Serena is the QF. It looks as if the only way Venus can stay in the top eight if she loses tomorrow is if Svetlana loses and Jennifer loses on Tuesday. If she wins tomorrow, then I don't see her dropping out of the top eight. The same holds true for Svetlana; if she loses tomorrow, the only way she stays in the top eight is if Jennifer loses Tuesday, but if she wins and Venus loses, then she would be ahead of Venus. For Jennifer to enter the top eight, she would have to win on Tuesday and Svetlana would have to lose or Venus would have to lose tomorrow and Svetlana would have to win. The most likely scenario; the top eight you see right now is what the top eight is going to be after the USO ends.

Do the top 16 got to the championships this year? Or the top 8? I haven't been paying attention to the format. I'm really wondering if Kim has any chance at all.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Just 8, but she's playing this fall in hopes to make it to re-re-defend her LA title.

Wouldn't Venus be picking up points in the fall? I don't think she's in much danger...at least I hope not .

So Maria is out of the top 8 for now. Is she granted a spot in the YEC as a Grand Slam winner, like they do for the men's Masters ?

Yes, but she would be in a better position if she won today, which I hope happens.

No.

She has to earn enough points to be in the top eight. If she doesn't, then she does not qualify. She would have been a much better position if she had performed better this summer.

thanks for posting it.

the first four has pretty much locked their spot in LA.

the rest four are up for grabs. I'd say that both Sharapova and Zvonareva have as many chances as Capriati, V. Williams and S. Williams considering that they will play more tournaments than 3 Americans in the fall. Unless, Jenn. Venus and Serena changed their usual schedules (basically to play 1 or 2 tournaments in the fall)
