Do we as fans Over-UnderEstimate top players opponents?....

I think we do...
Mauresmo...lost a set
Capriati...lost a set
Justine....lost a set
Myskina...out of the tournament
Venus....tuff sets in 2 matches
Lindsay...tuff set today
Maria...lost 2 sets
Serena....tuff set

This really proves that the depth in the women's game is rising. It's great to see. Our expectations of top players hold some invincibility to it...but on ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.

I don't know how you can underestimate someone you don't know in the case of Venus, Myskina, and Justine's 2nd round matches, but it's hard to estimate that certain players will give the top players trouble cause alot of them haven't before.

I think what you are saying is, based off the history of the lower ranked players on the WTA Tour...never giving them a chance has been the norm when it comes to facing a top play...so we just continue on as such....outside of Never have seen them play before? I think...

I'm not sure if its the fact that we are under-estimating their opponents,or if its just that for some strange reason, oll the top seeds seem to be struggling at this years' open.Even in-form lLindsay,is having a tough time finding her groove.Venus is not in form, and neither is Justine or Sharapova. If its fatigue or nerves, their opponents show neither.....they seem fresh and ready to roll.

She's Young, Gifted, And Smart!!!
She's The Baddest Serving B*tch Of The WTA!!!

R.I.P ELENA BALTACHA. YOU WILL BE MISSED!

After the Williams began appearing vulnerable, I feel this became the turning point in women's tennis. The players used to be in awe of these two women, but as their level dropped and other players began beating them, I think it proved to all the girls that if they upped their level, became stronger and had more self belief, they too could win and rise up the ranks.

Add Elena D, who at number 6 with such a weak serve, could be motivation, that you can win and get to the top. If you can cover your weaknesses well.

No-one seems invincible anymore, no-one has that aura.

Also, there is no dominant player on the tour now, its wide open.

very valid...and the Elena D and Myskina winning slams and contending heavily, inspires...so the point is well taken...especially about Elena D.

Well Serena and Lindsay have had tough sets but they took advantage of their opportunities quickly. I think both are fulfilling their expectations.

I think we forget what the ranking tell us which is that all those players have 4000 or fewer points which means they are beatable and all have had bad recent losses. Justine had problems with her serve before the virus. Venus, Serena, probably Nastya and possibly Lindsay are carrying injuries and Momo and Jen have chronic ones. Nastya is very tired mentally. Jennifer is scraping by on adrenaline. Masha is emerging as a top 5 player with the world's press in her face.

Having said that I have been surprised by three things. The best games I have seen so far have come from Sveta and Vera and Nadia seems to be racing too. Second you really wonder when the players ranked 12-25 are going to take advantage of any weakness at the top - they seem to be falling over early for yet another GS (Maggie, alicia, Anna, Karolina) Third you wonder how many people as good as Anna T and Miss Uberroi are lurking off the radar because they seem a lot better than most of the players in the top 100.

You have a point...the top players have been sleeping on some of their opponents...thats shows how everyone's tennis is vunerable right now...i guess we will see who tightens it up..and who loosens up...and loose. I just hope its not a Williams sister *remembering those days when they were sending girls some under a hour in str8 sets.... *

Venus and Serena ....Often imitated NEVER duplicated!!!!!!!

I've been surprised at the number of lower ranked players who are popping up and giving the top seeds real trouble at this US Open. It didn't happen this much before. The early rounds of slams, Particularly after the 32 seeds were brought in, were always a cakewalk for the Top ten.

The US Open seems to have inspired the lower-ranked players, and probably as someone said, the recent losses nearly everyone has suffered recently.

The greater depth in the womens game is beginning to show itself.

Sabine Lisicki, Maria Sharapova, Elena Dementieva,

Victoria Azarenka, Dinara Safina, Maria Kirilenko

Nadia Petrova, Samantha Stosur, Ana Ivanovic.
