Very fascinating. In the mid 1990's Mary and LD were considered the
biggest hardest servers on tour, now it's the average speed range of the
top 10.

yeah, strange isn't it.
What is it actually?
Is it that the rackets are evn better these days, or is it all a question of power or even ( ) technique ??

It's both. The face size of the stick did get bigger, and the modern
space metals have made it easier. Let's not forget players actually
(GOD FORBID! what a concept!) training in the gym. They did not
train in the gym in the 1990's, only nutty players like Steffi.

Racquets are definitely a factor (their technology has made huge progress over the last 10 years). Technique can be very important. I think a girl like our Walloon Warrior can dish it out hard thanks to her impeccable technique.
Still, can't get over Kuzzi being the fastest one

Please come back in top condition, J... I miss you very badly

here. I looked at the post twice to be sure, it
was really her name. And please remember it
has been windy these past days. Everyone's serve is
actually higher than this!

Surprised about Myskina and Zuluaga
It's all about technique for them too.

Yeah, surprised me too. Those and others in the list. You're right about the wind of course (on condition it's on your side )

Zuluaga is a rather 'big girl' isn't she. I mean, she tall, so easier to generate power... But people like
Myskina
Henin
Golovin
Shaughnessy

all look so tiny and still manage to hit it that hard.
Henin really goes for it with WHOLE her body, but Myskyna doesn't even seem to make a real effort, it must be all technique and timing in her case
