Dokic, Sugiyama Withdraw from Pilot Pen; Venus declines wildcard

NEW HAVEN, Connecticut
August 19, 2004

The Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament suffered major blows on the last day that players could enter. Six players on the main draw entry list withdrew, including Ai Sugiyama and former top four player Jelena Dokic.

Anne Worcester, the Pilot Pen's tournament director, had extended a wildcard to former world number one Venus Williams. The wildcard was declined by Williams, who will now be heading to Flushing Meadows to prepare for the US Open.

The highest ranked player to receive a wildcard was American Lisa Raymond, a quarterfinalist at this year's Australian Open.

I hope Dokic is skipping US Open too.
Good luck recovering Venus....it's US Open, dont repeat the slam results you had this year.

According to another article I just read, Marissa Irvin and Ashley Harkleroad were given the other main draw wildcards. Flavia Panetta, Tanasugarn and Chladkova will be the top seeds for qualifying.

Exclamation

Once I saw Sugiyama was in the medal round for doubles, I knew she was going to withdraw. I also hear that Molik withdrew yesterday and if Myskina is entered in Pilot Pen, she may wihtdraw too.

What I don't understand is why Venus declined a wildcard . Lord knows she could use the extra play to fine tune the kinks in her game.

I knew Jelena was gonna pull out. I hope she actually does something at the Us Open without any practice on hardcourts prior to the event, but in all seriousness, I just want her to show up at the damn event.

Here is a much better article:

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- The Pilot Pen Tennis Tournament gave its three wild cards Thursday to Olympic player Lisa Raymond and two other Americans, while it lost other players to the Olympics and injury.

No. 40 Raymond, who is also a top-ranked doubles player, enters the tournament on a wild card, along with No. 80 Mashona Washington and No. 91 Shenay Perry.

Some players who planned to compete, including No. 13 Ai Sugiyama of Japan and No. 15 Paola Suarez of Argentina, dropped out of the tournament because they were still playing in the Olympics by the time of the entry deadline.

Other players withdrew because of injury and illness. No. 18 Karolina Sprem of Croatia and No. 34 Jelena Dokic of Serbia both pulled out because they said they needed more time to rest before the U.S. Open. No. 46 Tara Pisnik of Slovenia dropped out because of a neck injury.

Players who are taking the places of the dropouts include No. 42 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia, and No. 48 Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand.

Meanwhile, Carolyn McVeigh, 14, of New Canaan, was given a wild-card entry into the qualifying draw.

Play begins with qualifying rounds Friday. The finals are scheduled for Aug. 28 at the Connecticut Tennis Center at Yale.
