How's your country's best player treated by the media in your country?

I'm from Japan and so our best player is obviously Ai Sugiyama.
Her status in my country is no less desirable. She really deserves a lot more attention from the media and general public as well. Sometimes I feel like she's far less famous here than other domesitic athletes who are totally unknown internationally. The Athens Games just reminded me of how unfairly and rediculously the media treat athletes. Tennis is getting bigger and more popular these days and in terms of the number of ppl who play the sport, it's more wide-spread than the likes of swimming, judo which are getting full TV coverage while tennis gets absolutely NO coverage at all.
Back to the thread point, it's just disgusting how the Japanese media in general ignore Ai's achievements even when she's visibly doing well.

Well, Australian media often mentioned our men players more than women players. For between Molik and Pratt, our Top 2 Australian players in WTA, they usually mentioned Molik but barely for Pratt even she's a Top 50 player.

Inspiration is for amateurs

Faves: Mona Barthel / Samantha Stosur / Roberta Vinci

Hmmm...We Dutchies don't have any good woman tennis players at the moment...So most media attention goes to our biggest talent...Michaella Krajicek, half sister of Richard Krajicek...

Im Aussie and the tennis only rates a quick mention in the news and there's zero coverage of it. i guess becuase Australia is such a strong swimming nation.

Thorpe, Hackett, Klim, Thomas, Lenton et al (all swimmers) and Jana Pittman all get the headlines. They're seen as bigger heroes by the media than, say Alicia Molik.

Philipoussis grabs a few headlines but only because he's banging Delta Goodrem (sorry about the language - bad reps not necessary).

Why is it that the world never remembered the name of Johann Gambolputty de von Ausfern-

Jankovic is getting a lot more media coverage in the last few months, so that's very good to see.
Dokic is almost forgotten.

well, first of all 99% of the media would walk straight past them, half of them because they don't recognize her, the other half because they don't care. There just aren't top players in Canada

LOL LOL LOL just watch my flag! Tennis is dead in Germany. No live coverage of Wimby men´s final though the channel had the right to do so...so far we haven seen ten minutes of Haas vs. Roddick and one of Kiefer or Haas or whoever...

I am so happy to have at least the chance to watch Eurosport. Weingaertner, Barna and they hardly ever get mentioned in the media, you´ll have let´s say seven out of 100 persons who know who those two actually are...that´s it..NOK NOK...who´s there?
