Serena's injury-protected ranking - for how much longer?

I was talking with a friend and we were wondering for how many more tournaments will Serena have the injury-protected ranking? I think I read a few weeks ago that she wouldn't have it for the Open but now that she's pulled out of the Olympics, will she get it for the Open (if she plays that is)? Or if she played in the Olympics, would she have received the protected ranking anyway?

The US Open can seed players however it wants to. Obviously Serena will get the no. 1 seed. As for Venus, after today's loss, I don't think anyone could justify her being seeded any higher than her ranking .

Special ranking lasts for a year or 8 tournaments.
In Williams sisters case, it's 8 tournaments + slams over a year with possibility of seeding.
So if Serena skips the indoor season, she is still technically #1 player in the world at the end of 2004 since she only started her comeback in March this year.

No, she would not technically be the #1 in the world.

She wont have used the 8 by the USO and slams don't count in the 8. Makes where to seed her at the USO easier because they can follow her WTA Special ranking which won't have ended but will make it look very odd as there will be 4 players very close in the rankings and she will be infront of 3 of them when her results wouldn't justify extending her special seeding past her initial 4 tournaments.

Many people will probably be surprised if she gets seeded as #1 in Australian Open next year.
However it is important to note that after she came back in March in Miami, she only played 6 WTA tournaments, which means she will have 2 left, even if she plays WTA Championship, she still wont have played 8 tournaments over the past year, which means the possibility of seeding her as #1 in AO will still exist.
