What happened to these players?

Angeles Montolio, Iroda Tulyaganova, Sarah Pitkowski, Cristina Torrens-Valero, Daja Bedanova?

Montolio was a strong clay court player, Bedanova had a lot of teenage success, and until Kim broke through in 2001, she was pretty much level with her. What happened? Then there was Tulyaganova, who I remember anhilated Kim on clay in 2001. She had a huge serve and great unharnessed potential.

Sarah Pitkowski- I saw her name in my ITF book the other day, and realised I hadn't seen her name in a draw for at least 3 years.

And then, what's happened to Mirjana Lucic?

Lucic's situation is just overall strange....

Iroda had a shoulder injury I believe and has been out for about a year.

I was only joking about Lucic. Her career was effectively over about 3 years ago! I heard rumours she was thinking of switching to baseball

What about Meilen Tu? Oh, and Clarisa Fernandez, the French Open semi-finalist of 2002?

Angeles retired, I think she went back to school possibly (she was supposedly very smart)

Sarah retired as well, and from what I last heard, she did some t.v. commentary in France.

Cristina has been playing still, but given her past year or so of results, I expect she will probably retire this year or next unless her results change drastically.

Cheers, Randy. Do you know what that means in the UK?

I remember you from years back. About 3 years. You told me you had an Ace of Base CD and you didn't like me at first for deriding Vaidyanathan! Good times! LOL

When did Montolio and Pitkowski retire respectively? Could have been 3 years ago with Sarah and 2 with Angeles.

Tu lost to Irvin 1 and 1 last week in Vancouver.

I don't think Fernandez has played since she lost in the last round of RG qualies.

Montolio - after a strong/streaky clay season a couple years ago she just dropped out of the radar. She won PORTO, then didn't win 3 matches in a row for 2 years and retired.

Tulyaganova - Go Figure that the WTA does a essay competition on the 'Up and Coming Players' a couple years ago. I wrote my essay on Iroda and my article was featured in the web page, at the home page along with one about Daniela Hantuchova. Well right after that Iroda's shoulder went BUST and she hasn't played since 2003. Her last match was 1st round loss at Sopot in August 2003. We are still waiting for a comeback. GO IRODA!

Torrens Valero - She had an amazing run between Wimbledon and US Open a 14-4 run beating Farina Elia, Serna and Nagyova. After that she is yet to win 4 matches in a row...the most she's done since is winnng the 50K Fano title. And she's still in the ITF circuit, I'm hoping she reaches stride and her Mid 2001 form before calling it quits.

Bedanova - Now this one really surprised me, and I think she just couldn't handle the expectation or the hype was ooo big that she realized she didn't have it. She's trying to re-hit the form that took her to the 2001 US Open Quarterfinals but I dont know if it was INJURY or a SLUMP that threw her off her game.

Lucic - Long Story Short, too much drama, too early of a start, family problems meddled with her tennis form and now she's trying to come back in and get in shape.

Pitkowski - I don't like her on court attitude at all, but I believe she has retired or is floating around the ITF Europe Circuit. Last match I saw from this girl was versus Serena when she kept complaning about darkness.

Tu - She's still floating around, she usually has one or two good WTA results that proivde her with great draws at ITF which boost her ranking which allows her to have the few good WTA results. This year it was Auckland and Berlin for her. I think she hit peak and how is making the best she can, so I wish her the best of luck!

Fernandez - Ounce a touted Argentinian, it was her 50K ITF Ortobello sweep in 2001 that got her going. She had an AMAZING 2002, up until the 2002 Roland Garros Semis. After that she only reached 1 QF. 2003 brought about the infamous sophomore slump and only 2 QF finishes all season. This year things started to look up to her but an injury kept her from winning another 50K ITF title or finishing the qualies at Roland Garros. Best Of Luck To Clarisa as she tries to get well and hit form.

Thanks

It seems that there's mystery to Bedanova's demise. I remember I saw her at Wimbledon 2003 in an extremely poor match against Poutchek. She looked SO frustrated, nothing was working, and she really didn't seem to be enjoying her tennis at all. Most young players go through such a phase, but with Daja it appeared to be quite serious, like there was no fight left in her. She was having to drag herself to the service line to commence play.

Mirjana Lucic - nothing's changed. That could have been written to access her situation 3 years ago!

Clarisa Fernandez is extremely surprising!! She was fairly fortunate in 2002 to reach as far as the semi-finals, but it was no fluke - was a good player. Nothing amazing, but certainly of top 30 quality. And young.

Any reason for her slump?

I often wonder what happened to Hilary Swank. She's only done a couple of flicks after her Oscar win. That thing with Al Pacino and Robin Williams was ok, but we really expect more of Oscar's leading ladies, you know?

Whitney Houston and her receipts:

lol, I remember the Vaidyanathan incident as well actually (though didn't remember it was you who 'disrespected' her for beating Mirjana! )

Angeles I think retired officially at some point last year actually, though she really had not played much of anything well before then. Sarah did retire several years ago (probably around 3)...She still had a reasonably decent ranking, but I guess with marriage (becoming Pitkowski-Malcor), she perhaps wanted to have a more settled life than the travels of tennis

Saw Daja last summer in Toronto qualifying, where she lost to Mashona Washington...It was an entertaining match, and very close (went to final set tiebreaker), but Mashona came through that one. Mashona is a good player, but Daja just ended up being overpowered most of the time. She was never a real big hitter, but it seemed as though she really lost all of her aggression, maybe just playing it too safe because of low confidence.

Clarisa has had injuries, so I think that has probably played a part in her drop/slump.
