'I had not played here for ten years because normally during this period I was preparing for WTA Finals. But I took advantage of the opportunity. If it wasn't Moscow, I would have never played for the third week in a row, because in Tianijn I played five matches within five days.' How much this season was tough? 'I had a difficult period due to the ban.
And then physically, it's always difficult to get used to the routine of matches and practice sessions again if you didn't do it for a long time. But I got special wins like against Simona Halep at the US Open and won my first title in a long time in Tianijn.' She finally looked at the future: 'If strenght and health are there, I will still be on the Tour for a long time.
You can see my love for the sport. I am trying to improve and win. Me and Serena [Williams] have many years ahead of us.'
I don't have a problem with anything Maria said until she mentioned Serena. And I wouldn't really say I have a problem with that per se, it is eye-roll worthy though. Mentioning Serena is a way to elevate herself. She must not realise how ridiculous it makes her sound.
Good, WTA needs to her to bridge the gap out of this crap generation we are currently in. Who knows, maybe 5 years there will finally be a LEGIT new crop of young talent to carry the tour.
The fact that she often lumps herself with Serena who is 6 years older and 6 million times more accomplished as if she is in her league is nothing but delusion of grandeur. Why doesn't she talk about Vika who is more in her league than Serena ?
- Do you want to play again with Serena Williams and how soon will this happen?
- Why make a guess? I think we have many more years ahead of us on the tour, we will meet again many times.
Maria made sure Serena would be a hot topic with her book. Most of the interest is based off Serena, and it’ll continue to be so for some time as Serena will find a way to be inserted, thanks to Maria documenting her years of demented obsession.

I don't click on outside links so my response was based on information given in the original post, which since reading more I realise was not accurate. Given the circumstance I think Maria handled herself well. It has to be awkward being asked questions like that. My opinion however, remains the same. Although, if I had accurate information and knew she was answering a question, I wouldn't have bothered commenting.
Classic, everyone is so quick to jump on Maria that they don't even check the facts of the situation. Unsurprising but disappointing lack of diligence.
It's also basically self-evident from the quote that it was in response to a question about Serena.
Her documented obsession with Serena IS the reason why she will continue to draw questions about Serena. Of course, she'll be asked about her. She dedicated her biography to Serena. It's exactly what her twisted mind wants to stoke her unhealthy fixation.
