Unhappy NY Post's Page Six: Monica Will Miss 2004 US Open

I'm not sure if this is true, but I'd thought I'd post it. It was in this morning's NY Post gossip column Page Six:

SEX & SUN IN SARDINIA

WHEN some of the wealthiest people in the world convened last week on the Italian island of Sardinia, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent were minding their royal P's and Q's. But some other plutocrats were kicking up their diamond-studded heels. The annual gala at the Hotel Cala di Volpe drew such renowned yachtsmen as Magic and Cookie Johnson (they were sailing on to Monte Carlo); Lionel Richie ("women were coming after him left and right," said one green-eyed observer); Frederic Fekkai ("he was going after women left and right"); Monica Seles (she plans to skip this year's U.S. Open, she confided); celebrated jeweler Laurence Graff and his chic wife Anne-Marie; and New York financier Martin Gruss with his dressed-to-kill spouse, Audrey. Gorgeous Eva Herzigova, who is launching her own clothing line in Paris in October, was given a champagne bath in the VIP room in the Billionaires' Club by model-holic Tomaso Buti. Buti, a fugitive from U.S. justice, is the ex-husband of Daniela Pestova and founder of the ill-fated Fashion Café. Persian heiress Aida Hersham, who had the longest yacht in the harbor, surprised her guest Geoffrey Bradfield with a plan to install his Millennium Modern furniture in her new flat in London's Eaton Square. While international impresario Unik was introducing the jet-setters to each other, his P.M. club back in New York was hosting Natalie Portman, Jeff Gordon and Vin Diesel. One can't be everywhere, but some people try.

I wouldn't expect her to play a slam again. Is she still ranked high enough to get in. Mind you she could probably play if she wanted to. If Martina can play wimbledon then Monica can get into the US open. No offence, I love Martina to bits but what a waste of wildcards at slams. They should go to youngsters like Nicole and Sesil.

Becuase it is the USO (and she is a former champion), she could possibly get a wild card if she wanted. I believe she may not play again, but is just waiting for the right time to announce her retirement.

I believe Monica has a special Emeritus Gold Exempt - if she comes back, she can have unlimited wildcards to whatever tourny she likes.

Hardcourts isn't the best place to make a comeback from an injury like hers anyway.
The French Monica, the French.

Since September 2002:
33 singles titles
33 doubles titles
7 mixed doubles titles
7 Fed Cup titles

Debut record: 14 out of 24
Retired: Oct. 23, 2006

Do you think Monica will never "officially" retire as sort of a "screw you" to the WTA so she can be spared one of those phony-bolognie tearful farewell ceremonies, like how hypocritical would that be anyway? She doesn't seem the like vindictive type, but you can't blame her either.

Garbo never "officially" retired, she just moved to NY and stopped making films. Same with Grace Kelly, though she wanted to come back to films but her people wouldn't let her. Is Seles Greta Garbo or Grace Kelly?

Actually, Gardo tested for a film late in the 40s or early 50s, but a deal was never struck and nothing came of it. But the amazing thing about Garbo was, when she died in '90, she had not made a film in almost half a century (her last being the misguided 1941 mess "Two-faced woman,") yet her death notice was on the front page of almost every paper in the world. She was the ultimate movie star and will forever be remembered as one, even though most people today couldn't name a single film she was in.

And her decision to quit films was completey her own, although MGM would have probably let her go anyway, as her films were not the money makers they once were and LB Mayer probably never really liked her anyway, going back to her contract hold out in the late 20s.

About Kelly, I think her husband and his family opposed any return to the screen for her.

Monica is probably not coming back for her own reasons, medical and otherwise. I don't think anyone controls her, any more than anyone controlled Hingis.

I still have faith that Monica will come back...I don't even think it's a question of her foot anymore. I think she's frustrated that she played like such shit in her World Team Tennis matches. To be perfectly honest, if she played like that at the US Open, she wouldn't get more than three or four games off a qualifier or a wild card, and she would be absolutely embarassed against anybody else.

Monica has said she'll only comeback if she can play at a level she's used to. She won't do the Michael Chang tour, losing in the first round at every tournament with the verrryyy occasional win. I think she's still practicing and I wouldn't rule out a comeback in January. If she doesn't comeback then though, I would expect to hear a retirement annoucement.

I was wastching a match at athens and tracy austin was commentating. The subject of their discussion moved onto monica seles, and i remember very well that tracy said "Monica, who has retired now, .............".

I think Helen has a good point about the WTA and it's treatment of Monica but Monica knows she has a ton of fans, so I'd hope she or Tony Godsick would just announce something so we can stop speculating.
