Olympic tennis *prize money*...

i heard a report on National Public Radio last week talking about the financial awards that the national sports federations pay to athletes who bring home medals from the Olympics - they said the federations in almost all first/second-world countries pay between 50,000$ and 150,000$ for a gold medal and obviously somewhat less for silver and bronze. I assume that this also applies to tennis players - so there is some cash up for grabs at the tournie, in addition to Olympic glory, national pride, and ranking points.

It depends on the wealth of the federation, and also on the player. Players are nearly always paid by their national federations to play Davis and Fed Cup, very few do it solely for the love of their country, despite what they'd have us believe.

That's right, it's an award from the country.
Canada does not believe that though, thus will not award anything for medalists.
