Scariest Rookie - Who scared the vetrans the most?

It seems like everyday we hear of a new up and comer, blaster her way up the rankings. We currently have Daja Bedanova, Angelique Widaja, Elena Bovina, Daniela Hantuchova, and many more. We had Kim Clijsters, Justine Henin, Jelena Dokic, Alexandra Stevenson to name a few.

It always amazes me to see such young players do so well on the tour. I can't imagine how tough it would be.

My question is, who in your opinion which rookie has caused the biggest uproar on the tour? Martina Hingis was awfully good (and still is). Jennifer Capriati wasn't too shabby either. Nor was Monica. Or Anke. Or Venus and Serena. Which player did the vetrans talk about most in the locker rooms?

Just a wonderin'

I think that Jennifer created the biggest stir as a rookie! But there are so many great young players out there! I think that this can only be good for the sport.

I think Mirjana Lucic made a a great stir, though she never delivered. yet...

To support my claim, I'd put all the post/questions/whatever on what's up with Lucic even after such a long, complete absence.

Also, Graf said she was nowhere near as good as Lucic in her age. That was after their final match.

i think jenn

i think there was more hype about marti already so the pros already knew what was coming...

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met./All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet - One perfect rose.
I knew the language of the floweret;/'My fragile leaves,' it said, 'his heart enclose.'
Love long has taken for his amulet/One perfect rose.
Why is it no one ever sent me yet/One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get/One perfect rose.

lol, may signature backs that one up!

yeah i think Martina and Jennifer did, there was a lot of hype surrounding them.

As for the Williams sisters, well certainly proved their opponents wrong! In the beginning, there were not many people who thought they would do well, but now look where they are.

I'd say Seles caused Graf, Navratilova and Evert the most concern with her actual on court results. I think they knew trouble was on the way. As far as media hype goes Jennifer Capriati's Boca Raton debut caused a massive stir which was backed up by her results of making the final and worrying Sabatini.

When Hingis first came out I think she scared everyone, and she just cleaned up really. Noone could consistently challenge her back in 97. She was just so confident, so arrogant, and seemed so clever.

Monica was pretty scary when she first rookied because noone had ever hit the ball with such ferocity. Same goes for Steffi in the mid-eighties - I think her single-mindedness and athleticism was scary.

Jenny was pretty scary, and she used to finish matches so quickly. But you always had that feeling that it was too much too soon.

Mary Pierce was very scary when she first appeared, because she was one of the first to hit the smithereens out of every ball as if she hated it. She was devastating in 94.

Now I think that Daniela Hantuchova is scary in her attitude and talent.

Hello people,
How can we forget about Serena. When she came on the scene, she rose up the rankings faster than any other female player. She started beating top 10 players left and right. She was definitely the most feared player because no one wanted her in their draw.

I am not conceited, I am just convinced

Mirjana was probably the biggest initial scare when she won in Bol (beating Coetzer in two sets) and then made the finals in Strausborg (spl.) (beating Tauziat and Zvereva and impressing Graf).

ugh, why do they all suck????????

Monica was the scariest rookie of them all. Look at how many GS she won before the age of 19. Nobody else comes close.
