Wuhan R1: Peng Shuai ousts defending champion [11] Petra Kvitova, 76(7) 67(5) 76(3)

3h 34mins of tennis just for Petra to lose this one. :hysteric:

She won one 3h+ match against Kerber last year en route to the title, and now she loses one, so I guess it evens out?

But nevertheless, Petra's results in this tournament have been quite weird to say the least... W-R3-W-R1 :p I guess that's Petra for you, lol.

Peng played very well, deserved this win with the way she just counterpunched excellently. She was able to read Petra's serve very well and she hit quite a few stunning winners herself.

Overall this was a very great match, Petra played well and Shitra rarely showed up (although there were some patches she sprayed, but overall was quite good), Peng was just better on the bigger points and in the third set tiebreak was just a little more consistent as Petra tired.

What match were you watching? Petra was purely hit or miss, decision-making and execution around the net was appalling in addition to being in poor physical condition, breathing heavily and winded, which she has been since her return. What purpose does her conditioning coach serve when she's in such poor condition and winded? A match goes three and she's effectively toast. I don't know how she trains, but my suggestion is to dump that conditioning coach of hers and find Czech boxers to train with. They'll get her into shape conditioning-wise and she'll be physically ready for the Pacific in January. As far as her game, she's still hit or miss at age 27, 28 next year and it appears that's not going to change "ever".

Ouch that hurts! Well done Peng though! She's having an excellent comeback year.

Another third set TB loss.

Peng extremely lucky to win this. Petra should have won the first set and then steamrolled through the second, instead she choked away the first and was then exhausted by the time the third came around.

Very low level of play from Petra today, serve is just so hit or miss this year. Today it was all missing. Pretty embarrassing to lose to Peng for the first time especially in Wuhan. But whatever, every dog has its day.

Apart from the random USO QF she has been in absolutely dire form since Birmingham, barely winning any matches. Needs to reevaluate over the off-season.

maybe she just sucks/is a joke of a player/[insert any random insult]?

Do you ever comment anything else ? This year isn't any worse than last year or the year before that. Infact top players have been more consistent this year. And last year is when Vika won that sunshine double thing. Didn't see you complaining then ?

Shuai. :inlove: She hasn't been playing physically at her best in the last month or so but this is a huge win for her. :smooch:

As for Petra, the tough season continues with her ranking suffering now a lot after failing to defend her points from last year. She has lost her last 2 matches in 3rd set TB. Hopefully she can do better in Beijing.

I'm thoroughly impressed by Peng. Last week she couldn't do much with that knee injury. Today she was giving everything she got. Petra is having too many off days and today was no exception but you gotta give some credit to Shu. She didn't slow down for a minute.

I'm worried about Shu because she must not be in quite a nice form all things considered but I hope she can make some kind of run here.

Petra

One of the most dramatic matches of the year. Peng hasn't been terribly fit lately and has struggled physically and Petra hasn't never been the 1st player one thinks of when the word "endurance" is mentioned but both girls showed incredible resilience today in a match that stretched both of them to the very limit. Petra at times looked completely dead but she kept fighting until the last point which is all one can ask for a player.

To say the match was close would be a gross understatement. If they had been forced by some cruel sadist to continue playing I imagine three hours from now they would probably still be level at 267 point each. Obviously this one could have gone either way.

Given the h2h between Petra and Shuai and Petra's success at this tournament this wasn't what I expected. I doubt anyone expected such a match. Then again, expecting the unexpected with Petra is often the best policy. And even though the shotmaking ranged from sublime to shocking today, it was still a cracker of a match with genuinely heroic efforts from both players.

She hit many second serve returns out which for us look like UE's but I don't think they are counted as UEs.

Anyway, she wasn't as erratic as she made it look like. It's just that when it mattered the most, she couldn't stop missing, like in first set TB and then all those times in the 3rd set where she looked like she had momentum, she'd flop right away. It's the pattern of her misses which is highly frustrating rather than the number. That's inexcusable for someone of her age, experience , accomplishments and talent. Then again, when we think of it, it feels amazing to witness what she is doing on court. She won a premier title and has a GS QF and her season is yet to over.
