Wuhan R1: Radwanska d. Rybarikova 6-4 7-5

A nice match with sweet rallies, where players stand as much inside the court as behind the baseline.

Magda struggled to keep her forehand winners in the court and looked kinda tired. I guess Aga made her move too much with her own variety.

As I said in the live comments section, Aga is more apt to play tricky than Magda. Magda plays more with instinct, while Aga likes to disturb her opponent's rhythm, but I suspect she does that naturally, not always with perfect cleverness, as she was leading 5-3 in the second set and made unclever mistakes in some rallies at the end of that second set - like, in those typical cat and mouse drop shots (Magda's not bad at them either), going crosscourt instead of down the line in the open court. So Magda had opportunities to come back and grew with confidence to get to 5-5.

But finally Aga broke Magda at 6-5 for this first round win (aggressive returns and passing shots).

Re: Wuhan R1: Radwanska d. Rybarikova 6-4 7-5

Two of my favourite players, regularly TF posters know that already. I've seen these two play some great, really entertaining matches in the past. But despite some lovely points here and there this wasn't one of them.

Aga is nowhere near her best and she was there for the taking but Magda, after a very promising start, lost all belief and confidence in her game and she was very poor during the midsection of this match. She picked it up a bit towards the end but even so, this was the poorest I've seem Magda play in quite a while.

That is four sets in a row now that Magda has lost by getting tight as the set reached it's later stages.

As for Aga, if this win is a sign of a resurgence in her results and an indication that she is returning to the form that made her a top 10 player for a decade I would be very pleased. But somehow, I doubt it. Prove me wrong Aga, please.

In Magda's defence, Radwanska is a pretty bad match up for her - she can't move to the net with much confidence because of Aga's passing shots. And half the time Aga was forcing her to the net with slices, drop shots & generally low-bouncing balls. Very tough for her.

That is absolutely true, if Aga is playing at her best. But she really wasn't today. Problem today wasn't Aga, problem was Magda was serving terribly with 10 double faults and only 43% of 1st serves in. Additionally Magda was making some horrid errors and lacked the commitment she needed to play her game. I wish the reason Magda lost this match was because Aga played really well but I don't feel that is what happened today.

But I do agree with you that when Aga is on top of her game she is indeed a terrible match up for Magda, yeah. I just wish Aga was on top of her game.

Also Magda's first serve % was incredibly low and served badly in general. If she would have served a bit better, the score could have gone the opposite way. Some lovely exchanges between them though. I like this match-up.

Yeah, it is one of my favourite match-ups too. And even when they are both sub par, these two will still produce some very entertaining points. But I've seen the two of them play some amazing matches today and this wasn't up there at all. For me, as a fan of both players, it is disappointing that neither of them played at even their standard level, nevermind their best level. It would have been nice if I could feel good about the play of at least one of them. I wish I could be optimistic with Aga seeing her performance today but if she stays at that level, I doubt she will get past her next opponent whether it is Gavrilova or Goerges.

A decent win for Aga in this #thestruggleisreal season.

I think Aga will be packing her makeup bag for Beijing.

Re: Wuhan R1: Radwanska d. Rybarikova 6-4 7-5

I think perhaps Aga would do well to actually hire a hitting partner that is slightly more flat of a hitter.

She needs direction and enthusiasm in her stroke placement, not just pattern after pattern of defensive slice to drop shot manoeuvre.

She definitely still has that IT factor about her, she'll win a slam most probably. I'm glad I fanned her after watching her perform as she did today, plenty of room for improvement, but what she lacks in dedication at the moment she makes up for with spite against the big hitter.

She believes in her tennis, I always knew.

Didn't see it but glad for the win. Re-match against Georges. Hopefully Aga can take it and prove she's on the upswing.

Re: Wuhan R1: Radwanska d. Rybarikova 6-4 7-5

There were quite tough conditions out there. Hot and humid. That's also why both made lot of errors, but of course as two talented players were on court, we could see many interesting rallies too.

Aga should've won that 2nd set earlier. Had 4-1 40-0 and 5-2 40-15.

Aga was not so good, but Magda needs her serve. Without this, her game is only half the value and today it was off.
End of story.
