Wuhan R1: Wang def. (14) Stephens 6-2 6-2

Bit of a perfect storm in this one.

1. Expected mental let down after major triumph
2. 5 or so extra pounds around Sloane's midsection (Champion's Belly as I call it)
3. Zoning opponent on home soil with crowd support and not afraid of you, rather relishing the chance for a big scalp
4. Extra weight causes Sloane to ballbash and not have the patience and endurance to construct the points as she did in NYC
5. Mental pressure as slam champion builds, Wang choking little bit in the last game but Sloane just wanted to go home
6. Challenger claims upset victory

Well done to Wang, incredible performance, 24W to 12 UE, and she is really pretty too, wow. Noticed her in 1 or 2 tourneys before but she is a cutie for real.

For Sloane, well, back down to Earth. Now she needs to decide what kind of player she will be and what kind of effort she wants to put into her fitness. Once you win, you have to work even harder.

Flopping post slam is normal, happens to everyone, the trick is to stop the slide ASAP

Haven't seen the match (was watching Aga vs Magda) but saw the MP and there's nothing Sloane could do on that crosscourt forehand winner. Wang seemed to play very well. Will have to watch the highlights at least!

lol. just lol.

Confirms my thoughts about both their U.S. Open runs.

Sloane is a pusher - but not a particularly good one. Most of those balls were just sitting there for a solid mover & hitter like Wang to rip through.

The difference between the US Open champion and Kiki Mladenovic? "About four games in a match", Wang says...

Nobody wants to draw her in the first round, that's for sure.

Wang was treeing! It was really great to see, amazing tennis from her, not much anyone could have done actually. Still, Sloane was flat and not ready for this sort of intensity. Hopefully a few days of practice and a better result in Beijing. Maybe she can go hit with Madison.

SO so beautiful - if she has a breakthrough tourney, must be the new face of WTA.

Pizza-loving Scone couldn't get anywhere near that dropshot to set up Snow White's match point (or rather, she couldn't bend over her tummy to get to it...)

Wang Qiang 86% of first serves won. Stephens 0/8 break points.

Snow White

It's okay considering it's Sloane's first match since USO, but it's still hilarious. And I say this fully aware of what happened to Angie in the post-AO period.

Exposed.
GS for women are just a joke - regular 2 of 3 but with the extra resting day.
Not to mention the draws are ridiculous because of larger field.

Snow White played lights out from *0-1 0-40

The stretch from there to 3-1* 15-40 was insane.

Not an easy opener for Sloane, poor scoreline to lose by; however Qiang Wang is steadily improving and is one of these players you don't want to be drawing in R1.

PS That's Stephens out of Singapore, right?
Then we need Peng to qualify for Zuhai so Snow White gets the WC!

Re: Wuhan R1: Wang def. (14) Stephens 6-2 6-2

Wang was rock solid until serving for the match and got tight enough that she couldn't get the strong 1st serve in. Finally won it on the 6th MP with two exceptional plays, a slice with side spin to get the AD and a cross court FH to seal it.

Shocking losses for Sloane and Madison Keys in R1 at Wuhan.

Wang played really well, Sloane just wasn't really into it which is not surprising at all

Nothing shocking really.
These Premier 5 events are packed, not like some joke GS event to ease you off with a day rest.
