Question Should WTA Hold Its Own Version of Laver Cup In 2018 - Post Your Dream Teams???

just watching some of the HL from the Laver Cup, and obviously the first thought to my mind was that the WTA should copy it in 2018 (just as they have copied almost everything else from the ATP)

Re: Should WTA Hold Its Own Version of Laver Cup In 2019 - Post Your Dream Teams???

actually in 2002 they had the Collins Cup, I think it was held in Ireland or something, and it was Europe vs USA

USA: Williams sisters, Capriati, Davenport, Seles
Europe: Hantuchova, Kournikova, Majoli, Schett, Dokic

it was a 6-1 demolition for USA

Collins Cup

so this time the ATP copied the XWTA

Yeah, it would be a great idea to have that again for the XWTA

Re: Should WTA Hold Its Own Version of Laver Cup In 2019 - Post Your Dream Teams???

Is there anyone interested in making it happen? It only materialized because it had the public backing of Roger Federer and Tony Godsick and they almost have a cult following amongst the tennis media and the tennis fans. There's also talks of a men-only team event in Australia and the WTA is watching the boat sail by as usual.

Team Europe
Captain : Kim Clijsters

Garbine Muguruza
Maria Sharapova
Caroline Wozniacki
Jelena Ostapenko
Petra Kvitova
Simona Halep

Team World
Captain : Martina Navratilova

Venus Williams
Madison Keys
Sloane Stephens
Shuai Peng
Daria Gavrilova
Naomi Osaka

It would be held in Monterrey or Seoul.

Russia is in Eurasia, extending across the entirety of Northern Asia and part of Eastern Europe. So no, Sharapova wouldn't be part of the European team.

Part of the appeal of Laver Cup has been the genuine comradery within the teams. Unfortunately I doubt WTA players would get behind an event like this because they really don’t seem to like each other much. A team competition where the whole team dislike each other would simply work. What team captain would be able to sway, for example, Sharapova to play doubles with Bouchard? You could probably strike most of the top 10 players out as not interested; you may get some of the top 11-25 women interested. Once you get outside of the top 25 or so players, you won’t get the crowds interested.

I’ve really enjoyed format of Laver Cup but sadly I don’t think it will translate to the WTA.

How in the name of all that's sacred is Bouchard being seriously considered?

no team captain with at least a single brain cell would let them play dubs anyway as the both suck af.

The WTA players aren't mortal enemies just like the ATP aren't bros for life. The guys had some salty moments over the years but it's always been swiftly brushed under the carpet. It isn't their fault if the media is always pitting them against each other while creating bromances out of thin air.

Anyone can cheer for someone for 250K. You wouldn't have Team World's celebrations but that's pretty childish anyways.

Laver Cup has nothing to do with ATP, it's just male players initiative.

Re: Should WTA Hold Its Own Version of Laver Cup In 2019 - Post Your Dream Teams???

Location: Chicago, Illinois, USA or Denver, Colorado
Name: Seles Cup

Team Europe

Garbiñe Muguruza
Karolina Pliskova
Caroline Wozniacki
Petra Kvitova
Victoria Azarenka
Martina Hingis (Doubles)
Captain: Kim Clijsters

Team World

Venus Williams
Serena Williams (if she's back at full strength)
Naomi Osaka
Zhang Shuai
Madison Keys (instead of Serena) or as an alternate
Sloane Stephens
Captain: Chris Evert

Having both Venus and Serena would also give you doubles even if Serena isn't full strength.

There was a lot of money spent on the Laver Cup. Everything from the court to the net cams was state of the art. I don't know if the WTA could pull that off.

It was easy for me to pick the first four members of my Team World although I did think about putting Peng Shuai instead of Zhang Shuai. I hesitated choosing Madison Keys but putting her forced me to put Sloane Stephens since they seem to get along. I chose Chris Evert as captain because I still think she'd kick a brick and cut a b**ch now that she doesn't have to hide behind a prissy exterior.

Of course I chose to call it the Monica Seles Cup becuase Monica gets no where near the credit she should for changing the sport.

And yeah I know the Canadians would find a way to get Bouchard in there although I think Françoise Abanda would be the better choice.

Also the sisters Williams only play doubles together right?

Re: Should WTA Hold Its Own Version of Laver Cup In 2019 - Post Your Dream Teams???

I really enjoyed almost everything I've seen of the Laver cup.
The format is very good (although I'm not sure about the points system, but I can't deny having matches on the last day be worth as much as the previous days combined keeps things exciting until the end). Even the whole dark/monochrome color scheme of the court to make the players pop more looked fantastic.
Great ambiance, exciting matches, players who surprisingly fought like it was at least a M1000 . My biggest complaint is about the matches format: best-of-3-sets is good, but I prefer a real 3rd set, not a 10-point decider. At least they didn't have no-ad
Looking forward to Europe kicking the USA world's arse on their turf next year

So of course watching it, I was thinking how great it would be to have the same event with women as these days I enjoy watching women's tennis more than men's (unless the women include bratty brainless ballbashers). I hope that WTA once again copies ATP, but I fear that once again they mess it up, I'm pretty sure their pick of players would be terrible and they'd put this in the middle of China

The WTA version would be a FLOP. Don't bother. Women don't get along well according to Sharapova, Muguruza, and Bouchard

Inspiration is for amateurs

So how come in every other major sports event open to European teams, Russia are represented?
