Alisa Kleybanova and Victoria Duval have both reached the final in the Lubbock, Texas 25K.
Just as cool, the two of them teamed up for doubles this week, and they've reached that final, too.
Yeah it's just a 25K but to me it's as exciting as any Premier final that's been played this year. These two are real heroes, not just for tennis but for life.
She wasn't injured AFAIK but she's struggling in three-set matches and lost all of them (hasn't been straight-setted yet). After losing to Kumkhum in Hua Hin F she lost to Sara Tomic in a 15K SF and to Wongteanchai in a 25K R1 (having gone through qualies in both tournaments). After that she took about four weeks off and played qualies in Las Vegas 60K (her first tournament outside Thailand) and had a pretty bad loss against Kennedy Shaffer in Q1. Duval is the one who played less tournaments this summer, actually.
I was really hoping this would be the final. Amazing. This is the kind of final where one isn't rooting for either player to win so much as one is just rooting for each of them to give good accounts of themselves, have fun, stay healthy and keep moving back up the rankings.
Fantastic news! Last I checked they were behind in the first set. SO HAPPY they came through! Just imagine their joy! This title might mean as much to them as a Slam final means to another player.
Kleybanova crushed Duval 60 62 in exactly one hour. :speakles:
I'm so happy for her! This will give her a real boost in the rankings as well as in her confidence going forward.
But I just hope Vicky was okay, not injured or anything because that lopsided score isn't the best she can do, we know. Hope she wins her next final.
Alisa emancipating herself from this narrative of a peaceful, feel good atmosphere and being defined by her illness by disresceptfully thrashing her opponent with this hateful scoreline Beutiful!
Good to see Kleybanova getting some success, little by little. I have missed her so much, and she has worked so hard to get to this point. Onwards my dear!
Amazing week for Alisa - what a great role model these players are. This is exactly the sort of thing the WTA should be promoting - real heroes and real stars.
I'm sorry for Vicky but a final is still a great result for her and there is no shame in losing to a former top 30 player. Congrats to Alisa, she is such a fighter and an inspiration and I hope this is the start of many more good things for her.
