Angry What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

This used to be a premier event that always fielded the top 10 players. Now it's like a Tier III event. A few top 10 players and that's it. When this event was played at the beginning of the season it always had a stellar line up and crowds were very large. Today the Kerber match was virtually empty. For such a prestigious event it has taken quite a fall

I know scheduling is part of the problem. The schedule now has back to back events in Tokyo. Who was the brilliant decision maker on that one?

It's a shame how far it's fallen!!! Look at past draws and champions from years past for evidence. SAD

Re: What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

well firstly..
it kind of is like a tier ii/iii event because it's just a regular premier

secondly, yes the schedule sucks. i don't think the time of the year is as much of a problem as two tourneys in a row, and being right before wuhan(p5), with beijing right after. i think it would make more sense to have the p5 be tokyo and wuhan be a regular premier, but i'm not in charge. not many top players are going to want to play 3 weeks in a row if they don't have to, though sometimes having that many tourneys in a row in the same area incentivizes them to play all those tourneys? maybe they can make tokyo premier right after a grand slam to capitalize on the grand slam energy? idk.

thirdly and most importantly... no stars. no killer japanese player except osaka who is inconsistent AF, and probably (let's be honest) doesn't get as much support as a fully japanese speaking player would. and pliskova and kerber don't draw crowds like sharapova and williams.

Re: What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

It was downgraded from a P5 to a Premier 700 in 2014.

The WTA is committed to at least 7 of the top 10 taking part in P5s (or compensating the tournament financially if this doesn't happen). Premier 700s receive no such commitment.

Re: What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

It used to be so good!! This was Martina's best tournament too.
Loved the carpet surface, so fast.
But yes, list of great champions. It's nothing like it used to be, sadly.

Re: What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

for 2017 the calendar was

Fed Cup
premier
premier 5
(break)
premier mandatory (2 weeks)
premier mandatory (2 weeks)
premier

Grand Slam
(break)
(break)
premier
premier 5
premier 5
premier
Grand Slam
(break)
premier [tokyo]
premier 5
premier mandatory
premier
WTA Finals
Zhuhai

it's not an utterly terrible calendar but it's too long and the spacing of the premier 5 and mandatory's could be better. the fact that there is no mandatory or 5 in the grass season (which they extended) is a flaw, and the premier that is right before a premier 5 and premier mandatory is going to have a tough time attracting players.

I just wish they would go back to the Tier system! The generic premier thing is still so confusing.

Tokyo should buy the PM status from Madrid.

Re: What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

The Roadmap happened. Same thing that depleted Stanford and New Haven. Top players might have opted to play these tournaments but with the Wuhan/Beijing slog around the corner, you risk overplaying now.

Tokyo actually has a decent field this year, though not sure why Muguruza and Pliskova who don't need the points are here. Unlike New Haven, which had a draw entirely composed of players in slumps who needed matches, Tokyo will still attract players needing to seal their places at the YEC.

Re: What Has Happened to the Pan Pacific Opem/Tokyo

Back to back events in Tokyo is NOT the problem. The problem is many top players don't want to play 3 weeks in a row with Wuhan and Beijing, hence they skip Tokyo.

I used to really like the tournament held straight after the AO.

Such a great carpet event.

It has a stellar lineup for a premier tournament. Muguruza, Kerber, Pliskova, Wozniacki, Konta, Cibulkova etc. What is OP smoking ?

Cibulkova
Konta and Slamless Wozniacki do not draw crowds
Which is why each match ii have watched on television this year shows an empty stadium during their matches. Wozniacki match on now and I swear to god there is about 100 people in the Ariake stadium which holds 10,000!!!!!!!!!

I agree. I thought Steven Simon said last year it was being reviewed. Then usual WTA uselessness I suppose. (sorry for going )
