Google Translate seems to do a much better job on Spanish -> English than (say) German -> English:

Ion Tiriac declares war on WTA

Accuses the women's association of generating large losses at the Mutua Madrid Open

The organizer of the Mutua Madrid Open tennis tournament is currently claiming a millionaire claim against the International Women's Tennis Association (WTA), which it accuses of causing a millionaire damage.

According to what THE WORLD has learned, Madrid Trophy Promotion, organizer of the tournament, will claim in court the heavy damages that it considers to be suffering for years as a result of the WTA action in relation to the Madrid tournament. The claim has already been entrusted to the benchmark firm of former tennis player Ion Tiriac in Spain, Business & Law.

The core of the demand is that the company commanded by Tiriac believes that the attitude and performance of WTA have been damaging the commercial profitability of the Mutua Madrid Open and counterposes for this the performance of the women's association in other tournaments organized by ATP.

The Tiriac society will argue that it can not be explained how the tournament suffers economic losses in its women's table despite the boom of the same in the last years with figures like Garbiñe Muguruza, Serena Williams or Maria Sharapova . In this sense, the claim will maintain that WTA ignores their contractual commitments or applies them in a way favorable to their interests, causing the economic damages to fall exclusively on the organizers of the tournament.

He will also add that the programming of the different international tournaments of WTA has adversely affected the organization of the Madrid Open. As an example, this year the tournament was forced to adjust its schedule to include players who were playing other international tournaments.

Following this line the company of Tiriac also reprimand that the lack of diligence of WTA in its management has caused the descent of the televising hearings, at international as national level, of the feminine tournaments, automatically diminishing the sponsorships. Finally, he will ask for an investigation of the company and contractual framework devised by WTA to violate the legal regulations that protect tournament organizers.

The judicial battle of Ion Tiriac with the international women's association takes place in full height of the Madrid tournament. Not in vain, the XVI edition, held last May, pulverized all the records of assistance recorded so far.

Thus, Mutua Madrid Open 2017 welcomed 260,228 spectators: 15,568 more than the previous year's edition and 38,000 more than the one celebrated in 2015. Another proof of its success was that the final between Rafa Nadal and Dominic Thiem was the tennis match most seen in TVE since May 2013. The public channel recorded a share of screen of 20.7% which resulted in 2,568,000 viewers who saw the triumph of the manacorense.

Ion has always hated women's tennis, he has always been mean and money obsessed. This case just proves the point.
As though he gives a rats ass about that. It's all about $$$ and about pumping his overinflated ego. And quite possibly he is trying to get rid of the WTA tournament that he is stuck organizing atm.
He is a businessman out there to make money. He is not running a charity.

I don't see how that makes him a bad guy

I read the article and I still don't get what exactly is he claiming against WTA. That the crowd don't care enough about women matches? :spit: And that is WTA fault because?
Strange lawsuit. I get WTA can do more to promote its circuit but to the point of being blamed for the economic failure of a tournament seems a lot of reaching by Mr. Tiriac.
Me neither but I reckon he's suing them because of their rubbish website.

:haha: Is this real? It sounds like an article from The Onion. Then again, I initially thought that about Azarenka's situation so

This sounds like the WTA has a mandatory now with no Madrid. They need to find a new owner and home for it
I read that Donald Trump is in a lot of lawsuits. When you deal with egotistical, wealthy people, they have lawyers on their payroll and they like to sue
But for WTA, if they can get away from Tiriac, it opens a spot for someone in Europe who wants a clay mandatory

What's another lawsuit to billionaires who already have lawyers on their payroll full time doing their dirty work on court already?

Madrid isn't going away anytime soon with plans to expand Madrid and Rome to make them 96 draws.

The most recent English article I found about this wanker:

Madrid Open owner won’t hand out trophies, upset with WTA

Madrid Open organizer Ion Tiriac said Tuesday he won’t award any more trophies at his tournament because he is upset by the way his friend Ilie Nastase has been treated by the WTA.

In an open letter to WTA CEO Steve Simon, Tiriac said he has decided not to hand out gold, diamond and solid silver replicas to winners of the women’s event following “aggressive public commentaries” by the WTA.

Romanian player Simona Halep won the Madrid Open in May. Nastase was photographed next to her during the trophy presentation, three weeks after the Romanian Fed Cup captain was ejected from the event for directing verbal abuse at the British team.

After Simon called Nastase’s presence “irresponsible and unacceptable,” Tiriac said the WTA should apologize to Nastase.

The 70-year-old Nastase has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Federation following his comments about the color of Serena Williams’ unborn baby and for his foul-mouthed outbursts during the Fed Cup in Romania. Williams called Nastase’s comments toward her racist and his verbal abuse of players as sexist.

Halep said Nastase’s comments during the match were “wrong.”

Nastase later apologized in a statement on Facebook, saying his comments about Williams were “spontaneous” and he wouldn’t try to defend his words against the British team. The ITF is investigating the incident.

The 78-year-old Tiriac also called on ITF president David Haggerty to “act in a fair and lawful manner” and allow a public hearing of the probe into Nastase’s behavior at the Fed Cup.
