She doesn't have the dance moves.

danieln1, PLP, Raiden and 2 others like this.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

Re: Is Sloane the next Kim Clijsters?

Sloane won her first slam final, long before she ever got near #1 or won any Tier 1's, so I dont see much comparison. In their games, Kim had much more to hurt opponents, but came up in a tougher group of players

I see no resemblance between them both, nor game, neither anything.

The only thing they have in common is their 1st slam title was at USO.

And I love both.

Also Sloane is 5-0 in finals, Kim had trouble closing out really big matches in her first career.

Re: Is Sloane the next Kim Clijsters?

If we compare them when Kim retired the first time in 2007 at 23 years and 10 months (so being 8 months younger than Sloane right now), we have :

1 Slam all
4 Slam finals to 1
12 Slam SFs to 2
14 Slam QFs to 3
34 Titles to 5
58 tour finals to 5
2 YEC titles to 0
6 qualification for the YEC to 0
2 Doubles Slams to 0
11 Doubles titles to 0
20 Doubles finals to 1
1 Fed Cup Title to 0
5 Seasons ended in Top 10 to 0
#1 ranking in Singles and doubles for Kim (Sloane never was in the top 10)
64 Top 10 wins to 9
12 WTA Awards to 0
393-98 record for Kim, 243-154 for Sloane

That's for the stats.

We can add that Kim had a backhand she could hit wherever she wanted, a lethal forehand, the best defense in the game, amazing footwork, great netplay, one of the best counter-puncher game ever, amazing lobs...to Stephens having solid shots, a good DTL backhand and good defense.

So what are we comparing exactly ?

How can Sloane be the next Clijsters when she's so far behind in any possible ways if you compare them when Sloane is actually older ?

Re: Is Sloane the next Kim Clijsters?

Sloane is a great defensive player who can occasionally play great offense. Clijsters (at her peak) was a great offensive player who could also play great defense.

Sloane is not very similar to the former defensive number ones (Angelique Kerber, Caroline Wozniacki, Jelena Jankovic). She is unique. Stylistically, Sloane is probably closest to Simona Halep, with a better forehand, weaker backhand, and far superior mental strength.

Re: Is Sloane the next Kim Clijsters?

At Sloane's age, Kim had already retired for the first time.

Don't see many similarities to Halep, though out of those 4 I can see the argument being made in that favor. I would choose Kerber or even a flip-flopped Jankovic (change bh to fh).

She is more like a Coetzer to me.

Venus Serena JJ Bethanie Vania Naomi
Petra S. Peng S. Zhang Su-Wei Vera Cici
Vesnina Sveta Crawford McHale Franny Zarina Sloane
Lepchenko Min Garbiñe

Kokkinakis Pospisil Coric Nishikori Berdych Huey Shapovalov
Sock F. Lopez Isner Murray Tiafoe Dmitrov Monfils Thiem Roanic Tsonga

You are absolutely right, very similar to Amanda Coetzer. She used to drive Steffi Graf crazy with her defensive skills, and she could occasionally attack the ball with her forehand. Sloane is taller and has a much better serve, so she should have a longer shelf life as an elite player.
