No Serena, no Sharapova (virtually), three really entertaining slams

Do we miss the goddesses of marketing? Sure. But the big off-court money players of the last few years didn't show up second week of slams. Ivanovic has retired to her real job, Wozniacki, Radwanska didn't make a dent, Sharapova .... we've been over that.

And Gran'Mama doesn't make as much off-court money as she used to.

But we just had three really good, entertaining slams. And of course, OZ was good too, but All-Williams slam finals are a proven draw.

I'm much more interested in Ostapenko and Stephens and Keys and Plisko and Muguruza and Vandeweghe and Svitolina and Kasatkina and Sevastova.

I think the kids are starting to prove they can carry the weight.

And yes, Venus more than held up her part of the bargain, but that's only what you'd expect, gratefully. This has been a really entertaining slam year starring a bunch of names you weren't expecting.

Hoo-rah.

Not blind. Not uninformed. We are party to atrocities. But the response of the world after 9/11 is worth noting. Even our most dire enemies offered aid. We should all be so lucky.

Oh, so your are saying the one who wasn't entertaining was AO? Seriously? I most certainly opened this thread to bash the US Open. Bye

Sharapova upset the world No. 2 in the most entertaining match of the tournament (and the most talked-about along with the final). That's hardly virtually no Sharapova.
Gerri, danieln1, joão. and 6 others like this.

The belief that man is an irresolute creature pulled this way and that by two forces of equal strength, alternately winning and losing the battle for his soul; the conviction that human life is nothing more than an uncertain struggle between heaven and hell; the faith in two opposed entities, Satan and Christ - all this was bound to engender those internal discords in which the mind, excited by the incessant fighting, stimulated as it were by the constant promises and threats, ends up by giving in and prostitutes itself to whichever of the two combatants has been more obstinate in its pursuit. Life isn't black and white, it's gold.

my own vote is the sooner they are both out of here, the better.

no question they are both awesome tennis players who probably eclipse today's generation in ability. but they are tired and boring to me, and maybe to some others. bring on the new, please.

What i'm most annoyed with is that the experienced kids that should be taking this window of opportunity(aside from Muguruza), are playing even worse then they did before.

Wozniacki, Radwanska, Halep, Pliskova. And in lesser sense, Konta and Cibulkova. Just all couldn't deliver. Seems like they are just not good enough when it matters most.
Then we have the experienced winners like Venus, Kuznetsova and Kerber failing as well.

The one who i thought would step it up: Svitolina, has been a mental turd when it mattered most.

And that's the top10 women we have in the game right now(aside from Muguruza). Not one of them was able to take this chance and (finally) win a slam (again). The experienced players just really failed. After this year, who of them can really say they had a great year?

Only Muguruza and Venus i would say can say they had a great year. Svitolina and Pliskova slightly, but they failed at the slams. The rest of them is top10 but actually had a pretty sucky year.

shrug

if you demand the players conform to your ideas of what should happen, in order to be happy when watching, then why watch? why not just watch what happens? And then be happy?

Anything can happen.

Re: No Serena, no Sharapova (virtually), three really entertaining slams

If 63 60 with 2 slamless players outside the top 10 is "really entertaining" ... then it was fantastic!
Same with the men. If Nadal bludgeoning an inferior player for 2 hours is entertaining, then it was great!

The most wasted of all days is one without laughter....
Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there
Enjoy This Moment!!

The thread is about whether or not Serena or Maria being present would be "better" entertainment.

My vote is still no. 1000x no. Thank-you but good-bye.

Babies, motherhood, empire-building, greatest-of-all-time, new career, addiction, whatever...give me an excuse, and I am happy to let you walk off into the sunset head held high!!!

Entertaining? Not really. This Us Open was one of the worst I can remember.

Re: No Serena, no Sharapova (virtually), three really entertaining slams

Why do you need to single those 2 out specifically and try to prove the tour is better without them? You started a thread to get people to agree with you on this? I'm not going to do it but surely I can come up with a list of players that I think the tour is better without but who cares really. It's not their fault your faves aren't winning!!!

True. The real final should have been the Sloane vs. Venus final. Would have been an epic one.
