Statement by Azarenka - may not play US Open (Update: Out of US Open)

Quote:

A Personal Note

My incredible fans and friends, who have supported me throughout my career deserve to know why I may not be able to compete at the U.S Open this year.

The day my son Leo was born, back in December of last year, was by far the happiest day of my life. I now have a brand new appreciation for how new mothers - and fathers – juggle the many different responsibilities for their families. However, like most working mothers, despite my unconditional love for my son, I am faced with a difficult situation which may not allow me to return to work right away.

In Belarus back in March, with my family in tow, I started working toward the goal of returning to the tennis tour and competing at a high level by July 31st. I was able to return early, playing in Mallorca mid-June followed by Wimbledon.

Shortly after Wimbledon, Leo’s father and I separated and as we work to resolve some of the legal processes, the way things stand now is that the only way I can play in the US Open this year is if I leave Leo behind in California, which I’m not willing to do.

Balancing child care and a career is not easy for any parent, but it is a challenge I am willing to face and embrace. I want to support men and women everywhere who know it is ok to be a working mother - or father. No one should ever have to decide between a child and their career, we are strong enough to do both.

I am incredibly grateful for all of the support I have received from women and men around the world who recognize the importance of supporting working moms and our right to be with our children. I look forward to hopefully having positive developments soon so that this difficult situation can be resolved and I can get back to competing. No parent should have to decide between their child or their career.

I remain optimistic that in the coming days Leo’s father and I can put aside any differences and take steps in the right direction to more effectively work as a team and agree on an arrangement for all three of us to travel and for me to compete but, more importantly to ensure that Leo has a consistent presence from both of his parents.

Re: Statement finally made by Azarenka - may not play US Open

We all knew it.

Pretty much she doesn't want to rule out the open, but currently that might be the case. The big picture, if she does rule out the open, you can pretty much bet the rest of the season too.

I really feel for Vika and I'm angry at the selfishness of this man. Why is he willing to jeopardise Vika's career based on his own selfishness and immaturity.

She is completely right - why should she have to choose between her career and her motherhood?

Strong word to saying nothing of note ratio here.

I believe the hypotheses offered up by a few here: that in a nasty custody battle, she can't bee seen playing the US open because it will be used against her to show she put her career over her kid.

Fair or unfair, it's a dog eat dog situation when you are dealing with splits that are non amicable.

Re: Statement finally made by Azarenka - may not play US Open

Really feel for Azarenka after all the hard work she did to come back.

Obviously no one here knows the details of the split but the babydaddy comes out of it very badly: he knew what kind of lifestyle he was signing up for, he had over a year to prepare himself for it. Nothing about the July comeback should have been a surprise, but after a month he's selfish enough to completely fuck over Azarenka's career at a crucial stage.

Basically confirming that Billy is the stumbling block that is stopping her from participating the US Open and calling him out on it .

A large chunk of her statement was about being a working parent. Maybe she was shading his unemployed ass and making it known he is making her chose between her child or career?.

It's just a bad situation all together. There is a mother (with a career) a father (with a career) and a child. No one can be knocked in the situation, it just comes with the territory. We can't say it's selfish not to stop his world and fly to NY, we can't say it's selfish to stop her world and not fly to NY. Vika did an amazing job here in using the word optimistic. Essentially what she is letting the world know is, her relationship with the father of her child is not perfect. There is no right and there is no wrong, but ultimately there should be a mutual understanding. Her hope is that mutual decision is something that supports her to play the us open. If it doesn't at least it will be mutual enough for a baby to have both parents around.

I expected something very similar to this.
However reading all these strange theories/speculation in the other thread was amusing

I really hope she can make it work and makes a good agreement with the father Vika is needed in the tour (and I'm not a fan)

Very good point.

Hope Vika will be able to return at some point during the Asian swing but then with no slams for the year and the YEC being impossible to qualify for, she may just decide to come back for the new season. We'll see. Hoping for the best for her and her family.

Yeah people are so quick to judge the father as selfish and stuff when they don't know sh*t about him or their relationship. These situations are difficult to handle and the father doesn't want to lose ties with Leo which is understandable. Hopefully they'll find a good solution for everybody.

Vika is 100% right!!!

In the end of the day, this abnormal interpretation of the legislation works against her right to work and still keeping her newborn child by her side!

Putting her in the position to chose between these two options must be considered as a threat to the human rights and that's not acceptable!

When you Google this boyfriend, all you read is a man with a steady job that met a professional tennis player, ended up with child, stopped his world to be apart of hers. I mean damn, let's not bash the father to much lol

and then you wonder why it didn't work out... people have a bad concept of how relationships are. Then they go with it , are stuck with it and don't know how to get out of it. Humanity is overrated. Human beings are so stupid.
