This was a great Wimbledon, so many superb women's matches

Despite the one sided final (which did have a great first set), this Wimbledon had so many really great matches and tons of good ones. Matches like Kerber-Muguruza, Rybarikova-Matic and Konta-Vekic were match of the year candidates being fully of great tennis, high quality play and epic battles between opponents

Anyone got any other matches they would nominate as to why this was such a great Wimbledon?

This Wimbledon was like 2014 World Football Cup. Great games, until the semis.

I think of it as having been good, maybe even very good, but not great. Every major has at least 4 or 5 excellent matches so

Actually, many majors don't have 4 or 5 excellent matches. Certainly not of the quality I mentioned above.

You need to see some of the slams in the early 00's

It was brilliant on the women's side this year.

It's just a pity it wasn't capped off by a really good final.

Konta-Halep was great and Pliskova-Rybarikova was pretty good too. There have been a lot of very good matches this year. Having Konta involved in two of them has been great for the profile and coverage of women's tennis here too. I think the quality of the women's matches has been highlighted more because there haven't been that many really good or gripping matches on the men's side.

Nah, 2011 Wimbledon was the one filled to the brim with superb women's matches (and probably remains the benchmark for enjoyable Slams in recent years). Muguruza/Kerber was the only high quality match this year.

This was a brilliant Wimbledon in terms of the women's matches -- either in terms of quality, or drama.

Kerber/Muguruza probably was the best of the tournament, followed by Konta/Halep, then Pliskova/Rybarikova... other contenders included the Watson/Azarenka match, Konta/Vekic, Kerber/Flipkens, Konta/Garcia.

Aga's two best matches were over McHale and Bacsinszky

Wozniacki's best match was over Pironkova

All of Konta's wins were admirable - somehow her run reminds me of Mladenovic's one at the French - many hard fought matches in a row at the home slam.

Re: This was a great Wimbledon, so many superb women's matches

It was good, but US open this year could be one of the best grand slams in the last decade, especially if all top players perform. With Sharapova in, Azarenka with some games on her legs, Petra the same, Karo and Konta doing better on hard courts than anywhere else, Simona plays top tennis, Venus, Mug, Ostapenko, Svitolina, Wozniacki's favorite slam, kuznetsova, Kerber can all win it, plus the dark horses like keys, Baszinsky etc...should be a lot of fun.

Re: This was a great Wimbledon, so many superb women's matches

The WTA always has a strong first week but can be a forgettable mess in the later rounds while the ATP is quite dull aside from one or two early upsets before the SFs or even the final.

It's a bit unfortunate that people only remember the finals.

The WTA had a higher quality tournament but people will question equal prize money because of that bagel in the final and that one Nadal-Muller match. Ugh.

If by "excellent" you mean hard-fought with high-quality tennis then maybe you've been watching the wrong matches. There are 127 matches at each major so I doubt you watch them all.

If anything the fail in my claim would be to think that there are only 4 - 5 excellent matches. But of course I too don't watch every match at a major.

Of course I've not watched them all, but the majority were fine or routine, I'm sure plenty were poor. But you do get wind of what matches were truely special with the quality of shots, quality of tennis, the drama, excitement and high level epic, can't turn away entertainment.

Lots of slams have good, hard though matches. But some slug fests can be dull besides the curious desire to see who makes it through. However hard-fought epic matches coupled with high drama and excellent quality tennis is another matter all together. And this Wimbledon seemed to just get so many really brilliant matches to watch, from start to finish. As I said the number of matches in the conservation for a top 10 or top 25 for 2017 list is ridiculously high from this tournament.
