Stop this, please. Elena does not deserve any more credit for a good performance because she did so with a bad serve. Her serve is a weakness (mainly because the placement is pretty predictable - always to a righty's forehand), but when she's not double faulting, it's more effective than people realize. When you never know if a second serve will come in at 100 mph or 60 mph, it's tough to get any rhythm.
Besides that, a serve is something that can be fixed. I'm impressed with Elena achieving so much despite her weaknesses, and I'm sad that her serve motion became what it is due to that shoulder injury. But she's healthy, and has the ability to work on the serve. So she doesn't deserve 'credit' for being a good player despite her serve, as the serve is completely under her control.
For that matter, if you're going to give credit to players for playing well despite weaknesses, how about Lindsay being able to win despite her lack of speed? Or Amelie despite her lack of mental strength? Or Venus despite her nagging injuries? You see, you can do that for almost any player.
By the way, it was a good fight from Elena in the second set. She played very well at the beginning and end of the set, while Lindsay struggled with unforced errors. That line call did change the complexion of the match, but I think it was going to be a tough set regardless with no clear favorite to win. And seeing as both
players got injured in that set, I think they both competed well to the very end.
