Tales from the Tour

Featuring Serena,Jelena, and Maria Sharapova

Serena back on form

Rounding up the news and gossip from behind the scenes on the men's and women's tennis tours.

Serena shows off her 'bobblehead'

After announcing at Wimbledon that she is not a tennis star but a "superstar", Serena Williams has been jumping on her own bandwagon once more in her home country.

The former world number one has had a 'bobblehead' doll (that's a doll with a head that bobbles) created in her image and responded in typical Serena style.

"It's amazing - but I guess that happens when you become overly famous," she said. "Every week now, I get more famous."

And every week, she seems to be regaining her form following a long injury lay-off.

In the Wimbledon final, she claimed she was playing at 20% but things had improved when she beat Elena Dementieva in the Los Angeles semi-finals.

"I'm playing to around 30% of my potential - you'd be shocked at what I could do," she said.

Sharapova was keeping quiet about her mystery inspiration

Maria Sharapova had the press pack at Wimbledon in a frenzy by thanking a mystery person for their help in her astonishing Wimbledon win.

With Sharapova refusing to shed any light on his or her identity, the newspapers were left to use their imagination.

The Daily Record were convinced it was Martina Navratilova, who saw a young Sharapova playing in Russia and recommended she try her luck at Nick Bollettieri's Academy in Florida.

The Daily Express reckoned it was her fitness trainer Mark Wellington, even quoting his mother as saying: "I'm convinced she was talking about Mark. He has been beside her every step of the way."

But The Sun had the last word, unveiling the mystery man as a "fat, balding, middle-aged - and happily married - multimillionaire" by the name of Mark Fisher.

Fisher apparently bankrolled Sharapova's rise to stardom after spotting the Russian's talent while she practised with his children at the Bollettieri Academy.

Dokic no longer speaks to her controversial father

Jelena Dokic revealed just how much her torrid relationship with her father is affecting her after she went out of Wimbledon in the first round.

The controversial Damir used to be an ever-present at tournaments with his daughter, but according to Jelena, the pair no longer even speak.

The last straw came when Damir accused his daughter of taking drugs to improve her performance and described her coach Borna Bikic and his brother Tino - Jelena's boyfriend - as "people of dubious moral and professional standards".

"I don't know what his aim is - if he's trying to screw me up, I think that's pretty sad," she said. "In an ideal world, everybody would like to have a family that's all together, but I think this is asking for too much in my situation. "I don't talk to him and I have nothing to do with him anymore. I cannot get much lower than I am at the moment. We will see what happens, whether I go down or not. It's not easy to deal with these things, but I have to find a way."
