There is no formula for the women's event. In the rare cases some seeds didn't follow the rankings it wasn't done according to the logic of the men's formula anyway.

Aljona #13 seed :scared:

Because the seeding formula was discussed and put in place for the men when the ATP was all about surface specialists, in the late 90s and early 00s. It was as much to stop seeding clay-courters in the top 4 when they could barely win a match on grass as to benefit grass-courters. The women didn't have that divide at the time - the top players were competent on all surfaces, much like the ATP now.

In one sense it's that Wimbledon haven't bothered to catch up with the way the ATP and WTA have switched around, but in another the WTA's current chaos can't be as easily attributed to surface specialists. It's not as if the players you mentioned are cast-iron reliable bets on grass, even if they play better on it in general. And you don't really get out-and-out clay-courters who really can't win matches on grass either.

I'd probably say the grass formula is out of date for the men, but there isn't the evidence that the women need it.

Finally that endless, pointless thread about Azarenka's seeding can die.

When will people learn that Wimbledon does. not. deviate. from the rankings 99% of the time, and stop speculating about things that will not happen

Anyway, two of the top 4 seeds having never made it past the SECOND ROUND has to be a record.

And four of the top 6 seeds never making it past the fourth round too...

I see that Barty/Dellacqua are the 8th seeds for doubles. Crazy that they just came back this year and are already top 8 seeds at a slam (yes, I know their FO final helped tremendously).

I really hope they get their maiden slam this year :sobbing: :sobbing: Hopefully this fortnight, too.

Casey has SEVEN women's doubles finals and Ash has 4 (all with Casey).

We just had a slamless week 2 in Paris, so what you suggest is reasonable compared to that.
These are some wide open majors. I cant wait for this draw!

Some top 8 seeds could have trouble right from the 3rd round. Konjuh, Safarova, Suarez Navarro or an in-form Lucic could all take them out. Seeds 17-24 aren't much easier with Coc, Strycova, Keys, Sevastova, Bacs, Gavrilova who have all done well in the past few years on grass. And then add the tricky floaters like Kontaveit, Flipkens, Pironkova, etc.

I expect maybe 6-7 Top 16 seeds remaining in R4. I think Konta, Pliskova and possibly Kerber will be the only top 8 seeds left then.

For those asking for what the seedings would be with the formula applied and those whose seedings are higher in green/lower in red. Bolded are those players who actually move up or down one or more seeding brackets (e.g. Cibulkova is bolded because it actually makes a significant difference that she is seeded in 3-4 bracket and not 5-8 bracket, whereas Konta is not because she remains within her seeding bracket despite being seeded lower).

I think all of the significant changes this would make to the seedings are actually very positive with the exception of Cibulkova being made a top 4 seed given how dreadful her form has been as of late (but, then again, she's replacing Svitolina whose top 4 seeding at a Grand Slam at all let alone Wimbledon is somewhat dubious too).

Also, here's a randomly generated example of how those seedings could actually look in draw form, since I think that always helps things like seeding lists seem more "real":

[21] Garcia v [14] Mladenovic
[10] Wozniacki v [24] Gavrilova
[25] Suarez Navarro v [7] Williams

Thanks for doing this - all of those moves are a really good argument for applying the seeding formula to the women.

In essence:

Top 4 - swap Svitolina for Cibulkova. As you say Cibulkova is in terrible form but this is pretty clearly based on her stellar grass season last year.

Top 8 - swap Kuznetsova and Wozniacki for Radwanska and Venus - would anyone really argue the latter two aren't the better grass players?

Top 12 - swap Mladenovic for Muguruza. Relatively minor change and Kiki can certainly play on grass but she doesn't have Muguruza's resumé on it.

Top 16 - swap Pavlyuchenkova for Keys. Relatively minor change again but unless last year's run has switched Pavs' grass game on for good, Keys is obviously the better grass player. (Though Keys is definitely in worse overall form - but this is why she's ranked around here and not in the Top 12, so you could argue Keys has already been bumped down because of her current form.)

Top 24 - swap Bertens for Safarova. DUH.

So you have a bunch of pretty intuitive moves that very few would argue with, no one gets bumped up or down more than one seeding tier...it works.
