Discuss Opportunities for Improving the WTA Calendar

The WTA season schedule sucks! It's awful!!

So many changes that should be made for a better season that is more player friendly and logical.

To name a few...
Dubai/Doha should replace Wuhan/Beijing as year end big tournaments. No one wants to go all the way to Asia after US swing!
4 weeks for Indian Wells and Miami?! Seriously?
Having only one green clay court tournament compared to like ten red clay is a joke
There needs to be a solid 3/4 weeks of European indoor tournaments either after AO or USO

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

It not that easy to move tournaments. IW & Miami have money behind them. Especially IW with its current owner
Wuhan/Beijing is still a big hope for the WTA. they want a player from China making a huge run at Wimbledon

You really want more green clay? They used to have a lead up to Charleston, but the money isnt there like IW, or they would have a little green clay season, but that would hurt Stuttgart

Blah, blah, blah, blah ...

Do you know that Doha / Dubai are also in Asia?

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

How are more green clay tournaments "more player friendly and logical"?
Also, not to shock you but Dubai and Doha are also in Asia and therefore quite far from the US too.
Just bump the calendar discussion thread and make your post. GM is bad as is, don't clog it with low effort threads.

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

Also if you are European, which is most of the tour, Indian Wells is as far away as most of Asia for all intents and purposes, Australia even further.

IMO there should be a parallel European indoor swing running with the asian swing. It would make more sense. Only Top 10 players have to go Asia anyway and only if they don't op out of the top 10 bonus money. So nobody actually has to go Asia.

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

Actually green clay is very profitable. Lot's of places around Florida to have a tournament or two. Many tennis fans in Florida, USA and also many players would play given the easy access from Miami and good transition to red clay. And yes duh Doha/Dubai are in Asia. But for example, players returning home to Europe from New York don't want to go all the way to China and Japan to play in the end of the season. Going to the Middle East would be much easier and there wouldn't be as many withdraws

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

Profitable is not just having a tournament. You need sponsors and serious money coming in. Florida already has Miami for 2 weeks. Why would you want the tour to stay there? Most of them want to get out of the US as soon as they are done in Miami
Where are they going to get these new sponsors for a small green clay event when you have a men/women mandatory right there

Its not that easy to snap your fingers and have a profiable WTA only tournament
I do wonder about Doha/Dubai's future. They want stars there to promote their tourist business and the tour seems at an alltime low in star wattage now

Indeed. It's perfectly possible at that point that, with the Mexico swing, players could be in the North America for 6 weeks, add in Charleston too if you want. Players will wnat to see their families at some point. I would like more Green clay, but it's not gonna happen unless some european tournaments switch, but by April they tend to want to be red to build to Roland Garros.

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

Back before the game was as physical as it is now and players were able to play a lot more often, having green clay and carpet seasons was wonderful for fans. In fact, if you look at tennis history on the WTA side, some of the most successful, pioneering, and fan friendly tournaments were on green clay and carpet. Hilton Head (now Charleston which is still great) as well as Amelia Island were beautifully run tournaments that were always packed with stars and good matches.

And I think there will be plenty of people who would be willing to extol the success of the Carpet tournaments which are now a relic.

But doesn't think all belong in another thread?

Re: The tour calendar sucks!

There also is more money for the players so its hard to get them into tournaments.
Serena and Sharapova a few years ago were taking a break in Feb when Dubai/Doha was being played
The reason they went to mandatory and Tier I is to try to get the top players in the same tournaments
There are so many different elements: sponsors, schedule, tv rights.. a lot of moving parts and hard to just say: this is better so move this and this...
Not realistic. Cant just add 2 green clay WTA events like its simple. it takes money to start and effects other tournaments
