Birmingham QR1: (2) Camila Giorgi def Emily Appleton 75 64

This wasn't streamed but must have been a mess. 21 DFs between the two players. Camila's 1st serve only 34%. A tight match even though Emily is a 17 year old ranked only 884. Camila was lucky - if she had been playing a better, more experienced player she would have been receving bakery products in all likelihood.

Well done to Emily for keeping it close though.

Yeah her confidence is non-existent. Her game is not working anymore ('cause she's less athletic than before) and all the missing parts of her undeveloped game are coming out. I'm not expecting her to come out of the quali TBH.

I guess personal reasons/motivation. Maybe it's because she broke up with her BF or something else I don't know. But she's not the same player as before.
She's still great but not as much as before.

She has decided to live her life without being a tennis slave, so has left behind the long training session to catch the good parts of life until she is young, playing tennis just to show once in a while her capabilities.

Going by some comments I'm reading here I wonder if people have actually ever watched her play.

I wouldn't call Appleton 'local'. She's one of the best developing juniors in the UK and had a ton of junior success this past year after a ood Uk age group success. I believe she will be a top 100 player and is something of a clay specalist too, a bit like Kiki Berten's, so this was a superb performance on grass for her.

Right. She's junior world #12 (highest was #10). I really like watching her play. But she's struggled a little recently and I wonder if in part it's due to her taking her A-levels this month. Must be hard to concentrate on both.

As for her future prospects I don't know. She is apparently committed to Vanderbilt in the fall.

That's good. We need more clay courters.
