Re: The best tactician
Myskina's performance at RG 2004 was a great strategic performance, which is different to being a great tactician. She went into her second week matches and completely changed her usual game to adapt for the slower, muddier conditions. She was usually an aggressive flat hitter who thrived on fast, low-bouncing surfaces (her best success outside of that RG came on grass and indoors). At RG she slow-balled, retrieved and varied the pace and depth of her shots - which completely undid Venus and Capriati, who refused to adapt at all.
An excellent contrast is Radwanska at RG last year, who changed nothing about her game and whinged about the conditions afterwards. Radwanska is a great tactician, one of the game's best, in terms of countering her opponent's patterns and executing creative patterns of her own, but she's actually a terrible strategist who frequently goes into matches with a poor overall plan.
Peak Hingis was one of the best we've ever seen on both counts.
