Why was Wozniacki in Stasbourg? Crazy to go to an Intl a week before a major anyway

#7 ·
She agreed to play last year and couldn't because of the ankle injury, she probably accepted this year to honor that, plus a good fee.
Unfortunately, with these minor injuries/illnesses she's had these last weeks, nothing good was coming out of this week.
Just another tournament until the clay is over.

Wasn't Rogers up two breaks in the 1st set? Thank goodness she managed that set. Roll on Shelby! :smile2:

Sorry to Woz, but how serious is it>?

Caro had like 4 set points in the 3rd. She probably just didn't want to risk anything by fighting a long crazy 3 set match before RG.

She could lose very early depending on her draw.
What the heck is this? :spit:

As if Wozniacki going to be one of the faves for RG or at least contenders for the second week :spit: She will be lucky if she wins 1 or 2 matches

New Haven is a premier won by some of the tour's best players.
This is an Intl where she wasnt healthy enough to play Rome.
1st set took over an hour. This could have been a 3 hour round 1 match 6 days before a major
if she kept going. Whats the reward? That she gets to play another 2,3 hours tomorrow?
Crazy scheduling from a veteran star

Hopefully this injury is not that bad. Since Dubai actually, she's having this little back injury, that doesn't make her serve well. I thought it was just linked to the many matches she played but it looks like it's not.

Hopefully she can have a good draw in Paris and reach maybe R3. :rain:

Shelby! :hearts: She's going to need a miracle to defend her RG points so I hope she can do something here.

It's a good win, she really ended up playing to Wozniackis weaknesses towards the end of that tiebreak, I said it at the beginning if Wozniacki doesn't get a brain for this amateur level backhand to great variety backhand consistency that she's always had and start playing some actually exhausting tennis, she's gonna lose.

Was not much wrong with her. She started to play well down 1-4*, even using the drop and some good shots.

Once she lost the TB after being up 5-0, she was just over it and had wasted over an hour. The MTO was not even with a consult and done for show.

I think (and hope) she is fine for RG run. :bounce:

That's what I was thinking, once she lost set 1 after over an hour and having set points on her serve, being in Strasbourg was a huge negative. Cant play a 3 hour round 1 at an Intl 6 days before a major. Then if she wins another round and a long match with Stosur and on and on. There's a fucking major on Sunday.
But how the fuck do you lose a tiebreak up 5-0? That takes a special talent

Awful. Why did she choose to play Strasbourg?:smash: Girl, a GS is coming:help:

Woz usually plays the week before slams. So this is not unusual for her.
If I were her coach, I'd skip these kinds of tournaments, take the week off to prepare for the slam.
Playing here was not a smart move for a wide open French Open.
Hope the injury is not serious.

I watched this match, and Rogers was looking sooooo dangerous, but dominating at 4-1, decided to gift a bunch of games with double faults and unforced errors. How come Wozniacki plays so badly on clay? Is it because of her flat backhand (because her Forehand is at least possessing more Topspin)? What was the unforced error count in the end? Yikes!

How come Wozniacki plays so badly on clay?
1) She doesn't have the right sort of movement for it - she's a runner, not a slider. Obviously this has gotten better over the years but the instinctive comfort level isn't there when moving, and Wozniacki with inhibited movement is a much lesser player.

2) She doesn't have the strength to hit through the surface - it's such a myth that clay is a retriever's surface. Maybe at International level but if you don't hit hard enough to finish the point it's not going to work out for you at the top level. (Rogers is the opposite - you'd think a fairly one-dimensional Davenport-esque BBB would hate clay but actually fast surfaces don't give her enough time on her strokes, clay enables the balls to sit up at the perfect height for her to whack.)

3) She doesn't have the finesse to win points with old-school clay-court flair (à la Errani or Schiavone).

Shelby is a sweetheart. Speak for yourself.

I keep hearing "hit thru the clay"
these tournaments are being won by Siegemund, Halep and Svitolina. They aint hitting thru anything.
Kerber beat Wozniacki in a Stuttgart final after Caroline led 5-3 30-15 in the 3rd set.
This year on red clay Caroline lost after having match point on her serve, then in a long 3rd set to Navarro, which was 2-2 40-0 and she was broken)then retired during a close match
Thats her clay results. Could have won all those matches. I'm disappointed she keeps starting so slowly but it seems she has a back issue now or some kind of excuse. I expected a much better clay season but she's playing like shit, not a problem hitting thru, a problem putting the ball between the lines instead of in the doubles alley or long

If you needed to hit thru the fucking clay Keys wouldnt be losing to Doi & Gavrilova and Coco wouldnt lose 16 16 to halep

And I was disappointed in how Caroline played in Madrid because she could have won that match and no one played well. Kuznetsova gave away both sets to Mladenovic just like she did to gavrilova in Rome.
I thought Caroline could play so-so and still win Strasbourg, but once she blew that 5-0 lead in the tiebreak and she's down a set after over an hour in Round 1 of a dinkfest the week before a major, I wanted her to retire whether she was healthy or not
No one is playing particularly well right now, maybe Halep is competing the best, but she will face more pressure in Paris and almost no result at RG would surprise me. Defense player or offensive

I dont think Caroline is starting her decline. But coming into such a wide open major, blowing a 5-0 lead and then retiring with a back problem is less than ideal.
I remember Pierce-Likhovtseva in Moscow well. That was when Sam Sumyk coached Lena and Zvonareva and Tu, all 3 players
