Goodness gracious me. I expected a lot more from Maria PR-wise. She and her team have had 15 months to prepare her for such obvious questions (holes in her story) but she has tripped up twice already.
In what world is asking how her team felt having been lied to "inappropriate"?
What the hell does an orthopaedic doctor have to do with managing heart issues and diabetes "risk"? Did she get her lines wrong or something?
Thoughts? Maria has been so, so brazen despite the fact that she is returning from a lengthy doping ban. I do appreciate her checking The Sun "journalist", however.

I am no Sharapova fan whatsoever but I can't see why on earth she'd want to answer that question and what the journalist has to gain from asking that. He got the answer he deserved.

It was a suspension for negligence not a doping ban
Quoting the CAS report
100. The Panel wishes to emphasize that based on the evidence, the Player did not endeavour
to mask or hide her use of Mildronate and was in fact open about it to many in her
entourage and based on a doctor’s recommendation, that she took the substance with the
good faith belief that it was appropriate and compliant with the relevant rules and her
anti-doping obligations, as it was over a long period of her career, and that she was not
clearly informed by the relevant anti-doping authorities of the change in the rules. After
its de novo review here, the Panel has determined it does not agree with many of the
conclusions of the Tribunal, except as otherwise specifically indicated herein.
101. Finally, the Panel wishes to point out that the case it heard, and the award it renders,
was not about an athlete who cheated. It was only about the degree of fault that can be
imputed to a player for her failure to make sure that the substance contained in a
product she had been legally taking over a long period, and for most of the time on the
basis of a doctor’s prescription, remained in compliance with the TADP and WADC.
No question of intent to violate the TADP or WADC was before this Panel: under no
circumstances, therefore, can the Player be considered to be an “intentional doper”.
Inappropriate as in it's a quarter final press conference and that question had nothing to do with anything. It wasn't even asked during her first press conference. The journalist was just looking for a reaction like most of the British journalists were. Tabloid sensationalist journalism has become extremely popular in Britain in recent years. Embarrassing when you compare it to the international journalists who were asking questions about the match and tennis.
Thoughts? Maria has been so, so brazen despite the fact that she is returning from a lengthy doping ban. I do appreciate her checking The Sun "journalist", however.
I hope she'll be even more brazen. Time served. Move on. Those who can't deserve to be figuratively spat on.
But yeah she's never been great at the PR spin. Even those who dislike her should be able to see that what hse's cared about most has always been battling it out on the tennis court.
Why should the press "move on"? Just 48 hours ago, Maria made the decision to answer an intimate question which the tennis community has been pondering for months. She gave a ridiculous answer and so the journalist chose to press further by asking about her team's reaction to the doping scandal. Suddenly, the nature of the questioning is "inappropriate". If Maria had any sense she would have drawn a line in the sand after the first round and said she wouldn't be responding to any questions not related to the match.
"Spat on"? Grow up. Firstly, I do not "dislike" Maria. I'm looking forward to her next match. I don't know her on a personal level and her biggest fans sure as hell don't either. There is nothing personal about this issue. I'm dealing with the information I'm given by Maria and processing it neutrally. I'm just not the type to blindly worship others, that's all.
You can't call bin-liners "the British press". that's an insult to the Telegraph and the Guardian, reporters from neither of which have asked the kinds of questions you're referring to.
Secondly, just so I can add to your (lack of) knowledge of medicine and the human body, Orthopedic doctors deal with bones and muscles. The heart is basically one big muscular organ, and it's responsible for pumping blood to other important muscles. You're welcome.
Your opinion does not alter the definition. The Daily Mail is a significant part of the British press, "bin-liner" or not.
Thank you for the laugh. Orthopeadic doctors do NOT deal with issues relating to the heart (involuntary cardiac muscle). Rather, this is the specialist domain of cardiologists.
Maria is winning both on the court and at the press conference these past days. She's not there to answer such questions, questions which have nothing to do with the match or with the tournament. I'm glad to see that she's 'way above that' and that she's not taking the bait. The British press can suck it.
As much as I like Maria and i HATE!!!! the daily mail, I don't get the problem with the question. The press is there to ask people difficult questions and get the truth.
the reason the question is valid is its not normal for a coach not to know what "medicine" their player take before matches for years. The fact that her and her dad kept this family secret between them speaks for itself
Sharapova has done numerous interviews on prearranged terms with friendly interviewers who agreed in advance what questions would and wouldn't be asked. In those interviews she spun a story that frankly beggars belief. The press conferences this week are the first time she's had to answer questions from less tame, more sceptical journalists. If she doesn't want to answer them, tough. I hope they keep asking them.
She secured many *friendly* interviews to say whatever she wanted to say on her own terms. She now can say "I've said everything I've wanted to say" to the hard-hitting journalists. Using "inappropriate" was a mistake, though. It will just anger Mike Dickson even more. That little smile she had for the Stuart Fraser (The Times) showed she could probably kill him if she could get away with it.
And if she wants to be nasty, she just have to let her agent do the dirty work for her.
What do you mean till she makes a mistake? She lied and contradicted herself many times already in an arrogant and unappealing manner. If doping was a criminal offence, we´d be at the point were her lawyer would suggest a mental incapacity defense.
I dont think the drug questions will ever stop.
She goes from city to city and country to country, and there are different media people, everyone wants to see if there is a new answer
She is the biggest name suspended like this, so the story writes itself, no matter what she answers
It's dreadful PR on her part not to answer these questions (unless of course the truth is too ugly ). By avoiding them she just perpetuates the mistrust and suspicion held by many people.
It certainly isn't inappropriate to ask about it since it relates to results gained by the player. Until she does name the replacement substance the questions will remain. What has she got to hide?
I fell and injured my wrist and knee. I went to an orthopedic specialist who treated my injuries. He was concerned about why and how I fell and referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist tested me for issues related to my heart. Fortunately, my heart is fine according to the cardiologist. The orthopeditic doctor accepted that report.
Surely Maria is getting good care from the appropriate specialists.
I see nothing inappropriate with the question asked by the reporter. Maria and her management have obviously made a decision to not discuss issues pertaining to the suspension. Which may be disappointing to many
