Sharapova and the French wildcard now a lot more likely

With Serena out of the French Open the already weak women's tour becomes and absolute marketing nightmare.

This is a tour desperately in need of a consistent star, ANY consistent star. The sooner Sharapova, Azarenka, and Kvitova return the better.

In my view the French will now feel a lot more pressure to give Maria Sharpova a wildcard just to add star quality to the women's field.

Re: Sharapova and the Frech wildcard now a lot more likely

nope. French Open and Wimbledon are not giving her WC. Those are ITF tournaments, not WTA. Remember ITF asked for a 4-year ban.
I think she got all the WC she could. It happened very quickly. No tournament is going to give her any, after those fast 3.
Her only chance to avoid playing qualies and ITF is to win a 1000+ points through those 3 tournaments.
If she only garners around 200 points, hello ITF.

Re: Sharapova and the Frech wildcard now a lot more likely

I'll say it once and for all, Roland Garros does not depend on women's tennis to sell tickets. Serena or no Serena. Maria or no Maria. The only people that would not come are the people that would come ONLY for them. Which is close to nothing.

The FO has a lot to lose if they award Sharapova a WC though cause the press won't have it (despite the fact that Sharapova pathetically tries to redeem herself with self bought articles in fourth tier magazines where she gives interviews about how unfair the world has been to her - see how she made the cover of Aujourd'hui en France magazine last week).

The bad words from the press would hurt the tournament more than a WTA star absence.

Jérémy Chardy - Pierre-Hugues Herbert - Roberto Bautista Agut - Albert Ramos Vinolas - Lucas Pouille - Dominic Thiem - Rafael Nadal
Victoria Azarenka - Johanna Konta - Simona Halep - Angelique Kerber - KIM CLIJSTERS

I have to disagree.

After the grass season she'll still get a WC to almost every WTA tournament. I think the LTA may hold back, but the continental grass tournaments may offer. Then even if the USTA decides to make a stand I'm sure the likes of Bastad/Jiangxi will.

However, all that given, I'd be shocked if she's not awarded one by Stanford.

Re: Sharapova and the Frech wildcard now a lot more likely

My guess is that she will publicly offer to play qualifying at the French, which will then be followed by a main draw wild card announcement. The PR will be much smoother this time (no "juvenile diabetes or irregular heart conditions").

You may be correct about tickets. After all, a slam event, any slam event these days, is bigger than any one player.

Money doesn't stem only from tickets though. The French, Wimbledon, etc, also derive revenue from television. Like it or not, Sharapova drives ratings.

Time will tell I suppose.

What would she need to do to earn a ranking high enough for direct entry?

Exactly. Any regular tour event will offer her a wildcard if she desires it-that's a given.

Too late for French Open. List already closed. Should/will be published soon. Kvitova is in.

Re: Sharapova and the Frech wildcard now a lot more likely

I think it's slightly more likely b/c there will be a lot less star power in the women's event w/ Serena out. But if the FFT had an objection to giving Maria a wildcard that was based on principle (and it seems like some officials have questioned the fairness of giving a WC to someone who is returning from a doping ban) I don't think Serena's absence will factor in much.

Also, I don't think the ITF's preference to ban Maria for 4 years will factor in at all. The national federations control who gets the wildcards at Slams even though they're run by the ITF. So, if the FFT agrees, she'll get a WC. If not, she won't.
