It's certainly time to admit...

That Justine Henin was a genius. At 167 centimeters tall, she was able to dominate the WTA.

When you watch the poor condition of short players like Cibulkova thinking about retirement because she has to put more effort than the taller girls into her game (serve and especially return of serve)...

Or, Halep, who has no real weapons or solutions against the taller players who can serve better into the court, hit the ball harder because of their natural long limbs which can generate massive energy like a whip...

Or, players like Hibino (163), Kovinic (169), Arruabarrena (166), Vinci (163 -; despite her lucky US Open run) and many short girls who are trying to fight the fight but are never going to be anything more than a top 30-50 player at best.

It takes way too much energy and technical tweaks to compete with the tall girls for scarce, measly results overall.

People say players like Halep should hit the ball harder but it's complicated. They can't generate great racket head-spin with their short arms, and, they do not have enough height in regards to the net to get the ball consistently flat across...

People say, they should come to the net, but, how can they cover when their wingspan is half of Venus'. Even Justine Henin had to come forward intelligently when a player like Venus could come in any situation because of her massive reach.

Giorgi is a massive exception because she has natural explosiveness in her shots almost exactly like a tall player would have. She's borderline hyperactive.

If the WTA wants short players to be successful again, they have to reduce the height of the net... or, try to find a solution without a net all together...

Until then, it's safe to say that no short player will dominate the game ever again in the next 4 to 500 years to come.

2040/2050 will be seeing the last short girls (under 170-175) playing the tour...

And, in the next 100 years, there will be no competitive female player standing under 180 in the top 200-300 of the WTA and that the tour will be essentially a WNBA/volleyball with players ranging between 180-200 centimeters in average.

Interesting analysis, but one thing I don't understand:

Putting "in the next 100 years" with "it's time to admit."

Then there's the net comment. Obviously a fail.

Mulder: "So you're agreeing with me?"
Scully "No! You're bat-crap crazy."

Re: It's certainly time to admit...

Justine had to work 100 times more than the other small players to be at the top.
Her body couldn't handle that and fell apart. She is an overachiever.
There is no way she could have lasted at the top.

I could not agree more !!
Henin worked like hell on her fitness with Etcheberry in the off-season year after year, and there she gained that extra power that made her competitive with all the rest. All the technique in the world dies not help when they blow you off the court.

She pushed her body to the limit and it reduced her career to 5 competitive years at the top instead of 10-15 (2003-2007). The reward was 7 slams, YECs, Olympic gold and +100 weeks at #1....

No pain, no gain.

The title of this thread reaches Volcana-like levels of anti-clickbait if you know what I mean.

Kvitova * Garcia * Konjuh * Dodin * Robson * Haddad Maia

I'm sure 100 years from now, our successors will search tennisforum.com, find this OP, and create a plaque in VikaPower's honor. Surely a visionary.

But then they'll see his posts about Bouchard being the greatest talent this decade and burn that plaque to the ground

Re: It's certainly time to admit...

We've been hearing for decades that WTA will be ruled by giantesses, and yet the average height of a top 100 player remains stubbornly stuck at about 175cm.

Sure, there are some tall women near the top, but also some smaller ones.

I don't think we're going to move to an average of 190cm. There just isn't a large enough pool of women of that height to draw your talent from.

Technically speaking, I think Misaki Doi is the most similar to Justine.

We don't know that for sure. The way science is advancing scientists are experimenting with taking genes from several different pools of people, putting them together to try and create a super human so who is to say this might happen some day and we might get a super human female tennis player who is tall.

Justine maximized her potential well beyond her own means. This is also why she flamed out and couldn't play on the tour anymore. She extended herself to such an extreme that her body and mind could not handle.
