Less than an hour in the office today, Angie. The lesser Pliskova really looked woeful out there, and she was almost given a lifeline in the second set (as has been Angie's MO all tournament long), but on to the 4R for the defending champ.

Another ugly win despite the scoreline.

Angie - your serve was horrible the entire match and Pliskova couldn't do anything with that 132km/hr first serve!!!

And her groundstrokes were sooooo slow too.

If Coco holds her ground Angie will be sent packing or might as well just looking to rebook her flights now.
She will be lucky to get 5 games. With serve clicking.

Congratulations Angie. Now onwards to the 4th round. Kristina was woeful. She was a complete mental midget during the 1st set. Dunno how she got to the 3rd round. Terrible match imo. I still don't know what Angie's level is like so far

the defending champ still in a pushing mode, no straight fh when needed. She's been lucky that Kris did not continue her run upt to 4-3*.

But a win is a win- and a straight one...
hopefullygives some confidence for the match against Coco. Best of luck there, you will need it (again)

this criticism is not just bad talk...

Honestly, I am not very impressed. Kerber is still pushing the balls. And what about that serve  I thought she said she was going to work on her serve during the off season. I see absolutely no improvement. My prediction is Coco will take her out in the next round.

A quick match was just what Angie needed. I don't think it will magically heal whatever is wrong with Kerber's shoulder, but at least no further damage was done. Now she has an off-day to get some physio and hopefully she'll be able to go for some more MPH against Coco.
Vandeweghe is a player who can consistently tee-off on weak serves. Kerber will have her hands full on serve; maybe her lefty spins will buy her a few cheap points here and there, but Vandeweghe's BH has been looking very sharp.
Kerber will just need to do more damage when returning. I'm expecting a see-saw match.

I do not understand all the negative postings herein. Scoreline and the actual statistics overwhelmingly favor Angie. During the match if you were a Kerber fan was there any point of apprehension like there was in the match against Witthoeft? The answer is not really. And do you really think Vandeweghe really has a shot? I don’t think so. Looking at Coco and the other potential opponents a realistic prediction is that Angie is a lock for reaching the finals and nearby maintaining her No 1 ranking.

Angie's chances are decent to make the finals, but not if she doesn't step up her play, particularly her serve. Coco will give her much more trouble than Kr. Pliskova did today, but if Angie plays solidly she should win the match.

Well, at least she won in two sets this time. :hysteric:

Obviously, her form is still quite bad although I thought she didn't look THAT bad in the first set (I know Kristyna was pretty horrible there ) and had some nice placements in her shots, made Pliskova move etc. What's worrying is that she once again seemed to enter panic mode after Pliskova stepped it up a bit more. She was very close of getting broken at 2-3* or 3-4* which could have lead to another three-set-mess  That last game was pretty good by Angie though :D

That 1st set was painful to watch. I want the 20 minutes back that I wasted watching it. What a complete waste of time. Anytime Pliskova was in position to win a game she immediately starts hitting the ball into the net or swinging for the fences. Angie didn't really have to do anything special except push the ball back into play one or two times. Such a complete mental midget. I won't be watching her play again anytime soon. As for Angie, I still don't know where her level is. Kristina didn't allow her to shine. Hopefully the 4th round match will allow her to play herself into form.
