AO R1: Lucic-Baroni def. Wang 46 63 64

0-4 for the Chinese today

Wang was so close but Lucic-Baroni stayed tough at the end. Surprised Wang could keep up with Mirjana's HEAVY hitting

Lucic hung in their mentally.

Wang is a smart player but not any weapons and a powder puff second serve.

Really, this should have been easier for Lucic.

But a win is a win as they say
When you're playing a Wang, it's good to be hung.

Yeeeees. :inlove: :yeah: :tears: Miki has broken that spell. :D After those beatdowns she received I thought she would never do it, then last year that thriller and now she really does it 19 years later. :worship: If Aga makes it through, she will play on a big stage here again. :bounce:

So happy for Mirjana, it's been a long time coming since she's found herself a win in Melbourne, well overdue - Came so close last year losing a heartbreaker in the end, so this is nice redemption winning a close 3 setter this time. No expectations against Aga, just hope she enjoys the moment, hopefully on a show court, and comes out swinging at her best :)

Truly meaningful win for Mirjana. It's a big deal if only because she could have lost this contest had she played with just a fraction less focus.

And what a milestone --she hadn't won a main draw Aussie Open match in 19 years. What a drought! But Lucic has been achieving some strange milestones since her comeback in 2008.

I could well be wrong, but I believe that the Open Era record for a player who managed to win another main draw Slam match after a prolonged absence from ALL Grand Slam competition is held by Tracy Austin.

Austin lost to Jo Durie in the 1983 French Open quarterfinals and did not play another Grand Slam event until the 1994 Australian Open, when she won her opening match against Elna Reinach, 6-1 7-5. That's a nearly 11-year gap.

And she never won another Grand Slam match after that, either.

I think Miki's 19 year Aussie accomplishment is greater.
