A single mother is usually defined as a mother who is not married to her baby's father. So even though they may still be a couple she is already defined as a "single mother" by many. I like Vika and such labels make no difference. I only wish that she and her baby are in good health and that she has the mental and physical fortitude to return to tennis when she is ready.

"usually defined"? by whom?
even if that's true, all i can say is those "many" are strange people.

I don't like her but I think she'll be a great mother. Every woman has it in her.
erm, no.

Well, that wasn't so much an "opening up" as a "spouting of tired, if true, cliches about becoming a parent."

But she did seem happy, and as a fan that's all I care about.

She also didn't open up as headline suggested in a column she wrote in August for Sports Illustrated.
My guess is Vika is still in shock and not so talkative about the subject as we would expect from her.
She certainly wasn't planning a baby but things will work out for her in the end.
She has money to hire nannies and her mom can help a lot, apart from her boyfriend who obviously will have a larger role in raising their child while she's playing tennis.
Let's hope he sticks around with her so things will be easier.

Hope she comes back and wins a grand slam as a mother! How fun would that be.

Even though her game is a bit one-dimensional, she is more of a sportswoman than many who have more slam than she has as well as many of her current peers...

It's probably a definition that varies by age, geography, culture, etc.

Most old farts like me in Middle America would probably define "single-parent" as a parent who is not married to her/his child's other parent, or another spouse (i.e. a "blended" family situation), even if the other parent is very active in that child's life or even co-habits with the other parent. Many, but not all, include a moral judgment on that situation as well.

But others would disagree. It can get a bit silly. I know of a number of "single" mothers who, after living with their baby daddy for years, suddenly decided to marry the guy and then, magically they're not "single" mothers any more because of a piece of paper. Then there's my situation where my wife raise our kids together for awhile, get divorced, and even though I spend as much time (and money) with them as she does, she runs around complaining about the trials and tribulations of being a "single' mom.

Go figure.

What's so difficult to understand?

Parenthood is a legal thing. If only one parent has authority over the child then that's it - single parent, end of story (it doesn't matter who else is living in the house and who fucks who)
Every definition of single parent can be challenged. IMO a single parent is one that raises the child alone no matter what their martial status is. A separated couple can be a single parent if only one parent is taking responsible for the child while another separated couple may not be considered single parents if both parents are taking responsibility for child/children.

I have a friend whose divorced and considers herself a single parent because her ex is an ass and takes no responsibility for raising of child while another friend and her husband (separated) but both parents are involved in the raising of the kids as they were when they were living together does not consider herself a single parent and neither do the kids.

Are y'all really arguing over the respectability of Vika having a baby out of wedlock like it's the 1950s?

The important thing is that she and the baby are happy and healthy. If Vika and her boyfriend end up breaking up, it won't be the end of the world. And she certainly won't be the first mother to have this happen.

And even if Vika has ultimate authority over her baby because her and her boyfriend aren't married, if they stay together and he helps raise the child, regardless of legal definition, Vika wouldn't be a single parent in the day to day aspects.
