The chicken or the egg?

Regarding Elena Dementieva's serve, I have one question:

1. Did a weak serve force her to develop a very strong ground/return game?

or

2. Did a strong ground game allow her to get away with a horrible serve, preventing her from truely developing her serve?

Neither... probably many years back, Lena's serve was normal.

She always had incredible talent on her groundstrokes... she developed that bad habit on her 2nd serve from shoulder problems.

I thought the shoulder problems came from the bad serving habits?

Probably due to her serve being all arm... which is a bad habit, but an accepted bad habit because it isn't as noticeable, and others like Arantxa have gotten away with it.
