Wimbledon Seeding--What Are They Going to Do?

Traditionally the All England Club has stayed rather close to the rankings when it comes time to seed for Wimbledon. This year though there may be greater potential to alter the seeding (mostly due to the injuries of the Williams sisters). It will be interesting to see how conservative or liberal they will be when it comes time to release the seedings.

The rankings I have here are projected rankings as of the semifinals, so it doesn't take in account taking off Birmingham/Vienna points. This though is not a big factor as most of the top players did not play that week. The only person possibly affected will be Sharapova, if she is not top 16 after Birmingham, I think the All England Club will bump her up to No. 16.

My projection of seedings to follow this post. Feel free to make up your own list

1. Justine Henin-Hardenne
2003 Semifinals
2002 Semifinals
2001 Finals
2000 1st Round

*She should be seeded No. 1.

2. Kim Clijsters
2003 Semifinals
2002 2nd Round
2001 Quarterfinals
2000 2nd Round
1999 4th Round

*Susceptible to not be seeding No. 2

3. Amelie Mauresmo
2003 DNP
2002 Semifinals
2001 3rd Round
2000 1st Round
1999 DNP
1998 2nd Round

*Like Clijsters, not a spectacular Wimbledon record, could be seeded down.

4. Anastasia Myskina
2003 4th Round
2002 3rd Round
2001 2nd Round
2000 3rd Round

*Myskina has traditionally done much better in the warm-ups than Wimbledon (especially 2002). I can't see the committee giving her a higher seeding.

5. Lindsay Davenport
2003 Quarterfinals
2002 DNP
2001 Semifinals
2000 Finals
1999 Champion
1998 Quarterfinals
1997 2nd Round
1996 2nd Round
1995 4th Round
1994 Quarterfinals
1993 3rd Round

*As a past champion, Lindsay will definitely be seeded higher.

6. Jennifer Capriati
2003 Quarterfinals
2002 Quarterfinals
2001 Semifinals
2000 4th Round
1999 2nd Round
1998 2nd Round
1997 DNP
1996 DNP
1995 DNP
1994 DNP
1993 Quarterfinals
1992 Quarterfinals
1991 Semifinals
1990 4th Round

*Regardless if Jenn is ranked higher than Lindsay, I think the committee will seed Jenn behind Lindsay (though I do wonder what they will do if Jenn wins RG).

7. Elena Dementieva
2003 4th Round
2002 4th Round
2001 3rd Round
2000 1st Round
1999 1st Round

*Just an okay record.

8. Venus Williams
2003 Finals
2002 Finals
2001 Champion
2000 Champion
1999 Quarterfinals
1998 Quarterfinals
1997 1st Round

*Obviously, there is much justification to seed her higher.

9. Paola Suarez
2003 4th Round
2002 1st Round
2001 1st Round
2000 3rd Round
1999 1st Round
1998 1st Round
1997 1st Round
1996 1st Round
1995 DNP
1994 1st Round

*A less than spectacular showing on the grass.

10. Svetlana Kuznetsova
2003 Quarterfinals
2002 DNP

* With only one Wimbledon, what will they do, especially since its a quarterfinal showing.

11. Serena Williams
2003 Champion
2002 Champion
2001 Quarterfinals
2000 Semifinals
1999 DNP
1998 3rd Round

*We know for sure that the All England Club is not going to seed her No. 11

12. Nadia Petrova
2003 3rd Round
2002 DNP
2001 4th Round
2000 2nd Round
1999 2nd Round

*You think Nadia would be better on this surface with those groundies.

13. Ai Sugiyama
2003 4th Round
2002 3rd Round
2001 3rd Round
2000 2nd Round
1999 2nd Round
1998 1st Round
1997 1st Round
1996 4th Round
1995 1st Round
1994 1st Round
1993 1st Round

*For obvious reason counterpunching doesn't exactly work on grass.

14. Vera Zvonareva
2003 4th Round
2002 2nd Round

*See Sugiyama

15. Maria Sharapova
2003 4th Round

*Not enough history to be seeded higher, and I doubt the All England Club is ga-ga over Maria like everyone else

16. Silvia Farina Elia
2003 Quarterfinals
2002 3rd Round
2001 3rd Round
2000 1st Round
1999 2nd Round
1998 1st Round
1997 1st Round
1996 1st Round
1995 2nd Round
1994 1st Round
1993 2nd Round
1992 1st Round
1991 DNP

* Too many early round exits to be considered a higher seeding. Plus the committee would never do it.

Of course it doesn't really matter where they seed you in the 5-8. So Venus could stay at No. 8 and it doesn't really matter, but then again that depends on who is seeded 1-4.

They usually take in account past performances at Wimbledon.

Hmm, just because she's ranked higher. And I doubt that they would seed both Lindsay and Venus ahead of No. 2 Clijsters.

I suppose Venus could be No. 3, with Clijsters at No. 4, and Lindsay at No. 5 but someone's going to get a slap in the face hahaha

1- Justine
2- Serena
3- Kim
4- Jen
5- Venus
6- Amelie
7- Nastya
8- Lindsay (#8 only cause her placement in 5-8 doesn't matter and they won't seed her #4 cause Jen will have won the French by Wimbledon seeding time )

was there a case in the past when they actually seeded down a French Open current year winner if she/he hadn't show much at Wimbledon?

anyone knows?

I do wonder what will happen if Jenn wins RG...even though that's on clay, but she's never reached the Wimby finals.

Not that I can recall. Even Majoli/Pierce got the seed of their ranking the year they won Roland Garros.

I don't believe they'll move anyone up except for Serena and Venus. My guess is that the W committe will not want the sisters to meet before the semifinals so they'll be seeded in the Top 4. This may mean Amelie might get knocked out and be seeded 5.

In all fairness considering Venus and Serena's dominance at W the last several years I believe this would be the most logical seeding regardless of what else happens in Paris.

Serena will probably be number 2, Venus Top 8... other than that I don't see too much happening (They could possibly put Venus in Top 4, but I don't see it really). I mean, they can change it, but there's no point dropping Nastya down because she hasn't been that successful in the past. Wimbledon generally tend to reward success (past winners), rather than per se downgrading those who haven't been successful.
