Upsets? What upsets?

Jennifer Capriati is ranked higher than Serena.

Myskina ranked three spots higher than Venus.

Funny that everyone is calling thier losses upsets. I thought an upset was when the higher ranked player lost, but I guess everyone expects the Williams sisters to beat everyone therefore anytime they lose it's an upset.

"And for the best of the teen-agers who followed her, and who occasionally referred to her as over the hill, Graf had a ready answer: against top-ranked Martina Hingis, Graf wound up 7-2. Graf's stirring 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 throttling of Hingis at the French Open final this June was perhaps the most emphatic parting shot the game has ever seen. "

Actually, due to special seedings, V+S were ranked higher than their opponents today..... None the less, it just speaks to the magnitude of V+S's accomplishments and stature in the sport that it is considered an upset

You got it, bud! That's why Serena was seeded second and Venus fourth. Personally, I didn't think either Myskina or Capriati had it in them to win these matches. Venus was my pick to win the tournament, but she had an awful day. Still, all credit to Myskina for doing what she had to to win the match, which was to make Venus play. Also, I wasn't expecting Serena to lose consecutive matches to Capriati.

On the other hand, I was expecting Dementieva to beat Mauresmo and Suarez to beat Sharapova.

Yes, but weren't some people arguing (quite loudly) that Venus and Serena are much better than their injury-induced rankings? And that the FO did well to give them special seedings? And something about Venus being undefeated on clay....

Any excuse for an argument.

They are better than thier rankings, and had bad days on thier most vulnerable surface.

Venus is now 19-1 on Clay, what's Amelie's excuse?

Serena deserved her special ranking, Venus didn't and she didn't need it.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Venus was seeded number eight because she would have been in the top half of the draw.

Be careful what you wish for; she won't get this special seeding at Wimbledon and when lower seeds have to face her in early rounds and lose, I dare someone to start complalining.

DA FOREHAND - I didn't say she had one, nor was I looking for one, nor do I feel the need to.

Sure, on the WTA rankings they are, but for this tournament they were given special seeding, bumping them up in the rankings. Also, Jen and Natsya get bonus points for beating the #2 and #4, respectively, "ranked" players..... I see what you are saying, but these wins, esp. in Mykina's case are upsets for sure.

Not to beat everyone, but Venus losing from Myskina is surprising. Serena's loss is quite understandable...Amelie's loss is bad too, since she was the best claycourt player of the year.

Well they shouldn't have gotten the Special seeding for the tournament so they could have lost in the 4th round. They were the favorites to win the tournament.

Like I said in another thread, Venus won't get the special seeding and if she does well at Wimbledonm, beating people she would not have met so early, don't complain.
