Graf in Zhuhai

It was so great to see Monica Seles in Singapore for the WTA finals - and Evert, Navratilova, Sanchez-Vicario and Pierce. But Zhuhai is so much lower key, so how come Steffi Graf is there? WTA website had her playing tennis on a bridge with Caroline Garcia in one of those publicity things but is she there as one of the sponsors is one of hers too?

Here in the U.K. I've been glad to be able to watch Zhuhai on BT sport but none of their commentators are there, we are getting the Aussie coverage. The crowd looked decent today for the semis but during the week it has looked to be just a few hundred spectators. Definitely a lower key event than Singapore yet one of the most respected (and least seen around the circuit) legends, Steffi Graf is there...?? What's the story?

Steffi Graf Justine Henin

Elena Dementieva Angelique Kerber Amelie Mauresmo Johanna Konta

Andrea Petkovic Svetlana Kuznetsova Maria Sharapova Heather Watson

Re: Graf in Zhuhai

Obviously, the WTA Finals is more important. But Zhuhai and the Pearl River Delta region is much more important for tennis ( ITF,WTA,ATP ... ). Stefanie Graf is tennis .

And the bridge ...

the region ...

Stefanie is a Vegas girl now. Zhuhai is a stone's throw away from Macau, the Chinese Vegas.

Correct. She can't stand Navratilova and Evert. They both heavily criticized Steffi for exclusively thinking about her own personal career and not promoting women's tennis when she was the best player in the world. Chris Evert literally said: "After Billie Jean retired, Martina and I were instructed on how to carry the torch and continue where Billie Jean left off. We took the WTA Tour to a whole new level of success. Then Steffi Graf came and we passed the torch to her. She and her family never cared about promoting the women's tour and continuing Billie Jean King's legacy. We had to wait for someone like Venus Williams to truly see some progress".
Another Chris Evert quote: "Steffi's record? Well, I would like to remind everyone that her cheap rival got stabbed".

Speaking of Monica, Steffi's relationship with her biggest rival is probably not ideal either. They formally became cordial when Monica came back to the tour in 1995, but the wounds of what immediately happened in the months after the Hamburg incident probably still linger to this day. While Monica was rehabbing her shoulder and battling with her demons in 1993-94, Steffi never reached out to her and was heavily criticized for her poor effort.

Re: Graf in Zhuhai

Someone mentioned here on TF that Graf is friends with tournament director in Zhuhai. Sure money is involved but apparently she is doing a favor too. Dunno if it's true.

Btw, WTA just posted a video with her.

This is contradictory BS (on one hand you say "promoting women's tennis when she was the best player in the world". Like what's that supposed to mean? What exactly was "not promoted" between 1988 and 1995? On the other hand it seems from most of your arguments that yer actually referring to doing promotion after retirement, which Steffi DOES do for a long time - in fact every year (around the start Indian Wells). That somehow she "does nothing to the sport" is actually a myth. It is true that she doesn't' go on the road, well, neither does Serena and she hasn't even retired yet

Other greats in other sports don't always do it either. Like Bjorn Borg, Michael Jordan, Maradona etc. When they retired they really retired (stopped being tour-rats, unlike BJK/Evert/Navratilova). Queens like Steffi and Serena prefer to live their own lives and promote the sport around their own personal schedule - outside of the weekly grind & traveling circus. In fact isn't it Muhammad Ali who swore way back to never be on the road after retirement (as coach or commentator and so forth) because that will actually subtract from his greatness?

Obviously someone like Navratilova has a different opinion. Martina is a teacher type so it's fitting that she has an urge to show up at every place. But Evert needs to shutup cuz she ain't even the teacher type. No one has gotten wiser after her booth commentary or on-court exposure to #shitchrissiesays (Exhibit A: Donna Vekic)
