That's 11 of 12 wins for Caroline starting in NYC, including Radwanska, Navarro, Keys, Kuznetsova, Osaka, Stosur, Niculescu
This week will be a tough test, her thigh was wrapped today for round 1

Didn't she just play her final in tokyo yesterday? Has quite a few physical matches in heat and humidity. And next day she is in other city and routining former GS champs? Woz is so fucking fit. Starting to near her former peak. Watch out WTA.

Sam Stosur please retire, you have been a walking bye at too many tournaments this year. Can't even beat injured players now that arrive late after long runs the previous week, not to mention the flights etc. :spit:

Sam shouldn't retire yet but she needs to do something.

Ugh, more gloat-fuel for goldenlox.

I feel, she shouldn't have played this tournament after withdrawing from one of her favourite cities tournaments in Japan due to her right arm injury, and that on her worst surface after grass. Definitely shouldn't retire because of an injury, but needs to heal up properly! She has been injured since after her R1 match at the USO vs Giorgi, and so secret about her injury... as usual.. Missing coach David Taylor too (who is now coaching rising star Naomi Osaka since her excellent showing at US Open), but hopefully will settle down soon. Sam is 32 as well, she is going to need more time to recover from these types of injuries. But Sammy can play on and enjoy her tennis a good few years more! :yeah:

NID Sam played quite bad with lots of unenforced errors and seemingly little motivation.

Great job from my danish Shieldmaiden though. :D Served very well and just seems mentally very strong.
A continuation of her form since US Open.

It is great to have her back!

Stosur looked hopeless out there. :tears: Hopefully she can find a good new coach and salvage the rest of her career.

Ufff...3rd year in a row since Wuhan existed in which Sam loses in the first round.....she should better skip this tournament.

Congrats to Wozzie, winning a match after she just won a title it means she's really back in form.

Ugh, I hate it when my faves are playing so early:sad:

Caroline played a little worse than in her Tokyo run. She served well (81% first serves in, of which Sam returned 74% in play; she was also fairly effective on her second serve) and also was consistently pressing Sam with deep balls. But she also missed some easy backhands and wasn't as offensive as in previous matches, resulting in a negative W-UE difference (8-10) after quite a number of matches where she was positive.

Sam was quite erratic, with occasional amazing forehands but also a rather weak and error-prone backhand, netting many balls. Her serve was not effective as well, with Caroline returning in play 97% of her first serves (these return percentages do not include the last two games).

Although the scoreline was fairly close in both sets until the end of each set, and each player was in each other's service games, after the first few games I had the sense that Caroline would prevail easily. I think that if necessary she would have raised her game, while Sam did not seem to believe in winning the match. Maybe Caroline's more defensive stance was based on her feeling that she did not need to go on the offense, since Sam was making plenty of errors.

Caroline looked uncharacteristically tired in the on-court interview, although this did not obviously impact her actual play.

That's just economic (i.e. smart) play. No need to exhaust yourself if less will do. :)

How is Stosur in the top 20?? Did she had a big result late last year or this year that has kept her there?
Her game style is suited to clay and she had a brilliant clay run. Unfortunately missed Stuttgart for Fed Cup duties. Final in Prague, Semi-Final in Madrid, Semi-Final at Roland Garros. In my view she should have extended her clay season, where she could probably have won another International on her favourite surface, but switched to hard courts early for the Olympics. If you want to see Sam at her true best, watch her on the bouncier, slower clay, where her heavy ball does real damage. These flat bouncing courts of Wuhan, Grass and Australia, really work against her.

By the way she was injured after the Giorgi match at U.S. Open - she was out last week with injury and withdrew from Tokyo. This is a mandatory though so probably didn't withdraw out of respect, specially as she is on the WTA player council and may feel she has to set a good example. I was hoping she would withdraw with that arm injury, clearly affecting her serve and errors, since U.S. Open R2. Over 30 errors today and bad 2nd serve stats which is meant to be her strength as she was #1 last year on 2nd serve. This year been struggling with wrist (both), shoulder and now the arm injury.

Lol, thats what people were saying before her run at Roland Garros, and thats what people were saying about Wozniacki when ranked 80th a few weeks ago! Fortunately injuries usually do go away IF cared for properly.

Queen Sam will be back, I'm sure. RG SF and still top 20:worship:
