Maggie Maleeva, Silvia Farina, Jelena Dokic, Sandrine Testud, Sugiyama

Off of those players, who's had the best career?
In my opinion, it's Testud cuz she has more wins over top players then the others. What do you reckon?

The reason I picked those players is that their respective careers are awfully similar!

Urm....well I dont know why Dokic is in there cos she is a lot younger then the rest of them...so I say she has a way to go before I look back on her career.

I think Testud by virtue of the fact she made a slam final, though I have to say I highly reard both Maleeva and Sugiyama.

I agree with you that Sandrine has had the best career but she's never made a GS final.

I agree, it's Maleeva. Testud has a slightly better slam record, and even I love her to death, Maggie's had the better career. She has more titles that are better than Sandrine's and she's still cooking - I give her the award out of those players.

Lindsay Davenport - Anna Smashnova - Lisa Raymond - Sandrine Testud - Paola Suarez - Amelie Mauresmo - Virginia Ruano-Pascual - Nadia Petrova - Chanda Rubin - Cara Black - Tathiana Garbin - Anne Kremer - Monica Seles - Fabiola Zuluaga - Maria Sanchez-Lorenzo - Amanda Coetzer - Rita Grande - Meghann Shaughnessy - Magui Serna - Nathalie Dechy - Kim Clijsters - Elena Tatarkova - Maria Sharapova - Alicia Molik - Julia Vakulenko - Elena Likhovtseva - Anastasia Myskina - Emilie Loit

I voted Silvia because I felt as though you could never right her off and she ended up suprising some people with some unexpected wins.

Considering singles only, it has to be Maleeva - she has a handful of Tier I and Tier II titles, is one of a few players who has won titles on all surfaces, and has a highest ranking of No. 4.

While we can't really include Dokic in this group, due to her age, I'd say she has been more successful than the rest other than Maleeva. She has a couple of Tier I titles, has made a Grand Slam semi, won titles on clay, hard, grass and carpet, and has a highest ranking of No. 4.

Sugiyama has 2 Tier II and 4 Tier III titles; Testud only has one Tier II and two Tier IV titles. Farina Elia has three Tier III titles, all at Strasbourg and has never been in the Top 10 (highest at No. 11)

However, when you include doubles, then Sugiyama clearly has had the best career out of this group - 28 doubles titles, including 3 slams, and one US Open mixed title to the six singles titles, a top 10 singles ranking and a No. 1 doubles ranking.

Yeah, Ai's had a great run in her career...but take one look at the Win-Loss record on different surfaces and against top players, and really, her #8 ranking in singles doesn't really look good (I think hardcourt's the only surface where Ai's had a leading W-L stat, and she's yet to post a win over a lot of top players).

Maggie's probably the one I'd pick. Like you said, she's been no.4, won titles on all surfaces and has won Tier I, II and III titles before. Plus, her GS record isn't bad - 4th rounds at AO, RG and Wimby, plus a QF at USO isn't something to be ashamed about. And her doubles record is pretty good as well, esp. when she teamed up with Leizel last year.
