AHM-i-lee moh-RES-moh

What's up with the pronunciation guide on wtatour.com?

If they think that "AHM-i-lee moh-RES-moh" is how a Frenchman would pronounce Amélie's name then...

Seriously, can't they use phonetic symbols? Or at least put the stress on the right syllable

It's not AHM-i-lee.. in the middle it's the "i" but it"ll be more like "AHM-ay-lee" (ay like in play) that's how we pronounce it in french.

As for the phonetic, maybe lot of people didn't learn it in school?

Isn't the stress on the last syllable?

Quite agree! They seem to suggest "PAMELA" is pronounced "STEW-PID GIR-RAFF WOMAN"

I always say:

AM-uh-lee More-EZ-mo.... but I would have thought that her first name should more strictly be pronounced something closer to AM-ay-LEE.

All that said, presumably Amelie and others get to approve these pronunciations given on their respective pages on the WTA site. Or am I being naive?

It's ah-may-LEE mo-rez-MO, roughly, although I usually end up saying mo-REZ-mo. That, however, isn't really the right way. French words are almost always accented on the last syllable, and the exanct prononciation varies with the regional accent.

But AHM-i-lee/AH-mi-li/AHM-uh-lee/AH-mah-lee are a bit off base. (Nothing wrong with that if you don't know French) At least no one has suggested Emily, or ah-MEL-ie, both of which I have heard people use while trying to say the name of the movie character. I wanted to them. And people (read, silly anglophones) assume it's a typo of Amelia.

Now I can see why everyone calls her Momo!

Well, I walk into the room
Passing out hundred dollar bills
And it kills and it thrills like the horns on my Silverado grill
And I buy the bar a double round of crown
And everybody's getting down
And this town ain't never gonna be the same.
Cause I saddle up my horse and I ride into the city
I make a lot of noise
Cause the girls, they are so pretty...

All
ez Amélie!
